Feature Transfer Error installing patch 1.61

I tried to install patch 1.61 with both the built-in feature and by downloading the file from 2k's website. The installshield wizard comes up, and then I get the error:

Feature Transfer Error
Feature: DefaultFeature
Component:
File:
Error: Catastrophic failure

This is possibly the world's least helpful error message. Has anyone else run into this, or have any advice on what I could try?

Try to uninstall the game completely, reinstall, apply the patch (if possible). Redownload the patch.
