So, I'm almost done with my first game.

I'm at swashbuckler level now, and suddenly, I can't win a single sword fight. Whereas I never lost a single one on earlier levels.

Is the trick in watching very closely to your opponent, and then taking the right defense? I suck a that a lot :( .

The duels on swash are too quick for me too, so I play on rogue level.

The trick is to dodge your opponents swings and then counter-attack as soon as possible. The cutlass is best for doing this becuase it speeds up your defensive moves. That is all there is to it really.

take skill at fencing, get all the fencing gear and sit on 1

And if you are older than 36, retire

Thrust more often. Use a rapier.

I suggest a perfectly balanced sword. It's quicker that most things, which is good.
I had trouble with defense. But it's kind of easy when they put their swords back you can set up the defense. Or you can quickly a thrust (I think it's a thrust) to repel another thrust. I got used to it eventually. But I'm usually first on attack and from there it's my speed vs. their... "speed"

Finally I can say that after alot of training, I'm able to win almost all my sword fights in first try on swashbuckler level. I always use Cutlass. It makes your defensive moves very fast. Most opponents attack you all the time, so you just have to wait for their moves and do the right defensive move. Wait for them to do a swing for your head or a swing for your feet. Duck or jump and then do a quick attack on their feet. Repeat. If they just wait for you to attack (while their head is spinning), haunt them. With every failed attack, their head is going to spin and they'll get slower and easier to manage. Once you make a succesful hit on them, they'll get fast again. Number '5' is your friend.

My problem is that if I see my opponent going for the high-chop or low-strike, an immediate thrust is slower than my opponent's strike. Even with perfectly balanced swords, full gear and skill on fencing. I guess I was over 36 though....

Taking the right defense indeed works better, but I'm not good at it (just like it costed me a few dozen ball-room-dances to be succesful).
