First of all sorry if there is a threat somewhere about this unit but couldn´t find it, i couldn´t find anything on google about this unit. Not even ffh own unit catalog had any mentions about it.

It is a spider, a big one, BUT i have no idea about its strength or anything. It just appears kills my unit and goes back to stealth. I even had one unit on top of it and when the npc turn came it attacked unit next to it and went back to stealth. I dont complain i think it is cool unit but hell i´d like to know if i can kill it say with 4 warriors or do i have to bring entire legion for it.

In the pic you see the text on top and the spider is where i have drawn the red circle, problem is i can see it even if i move my unit on it.

thanks for that but why there is not any mention about this unit anywhere? Or is it just a fancy big spider with fancy name and nothing else?

It was probably spawned as part of a lair/ruin/dungeon exploration that went terribly wrong. And yes, it's not a special hero unit, but a normal giant spider with the hero promotion.

Feriad,

Sorry I'm at work right now, so I don;t have all of the details; I'll recheck them.

Spiders are considered animals - so they are generated to some degree like wolves, bears, etc. although as far as I know they don't have specfici spawn buildings as bears do. As animals, they are 'barbarian' units, and they will not move into your cultural borders. If you culture expands into a square with a spider, the spider will not attack within your culture borders. As mentioned above, th ey are favorites for inhabiting dungeons, lairs, etc.

The main difference between spiders and 'normal' animals is that spiders are 'hidden' to most units. The hidden rules can be complex. Since spiders are hidden, you can walk right onto their square. You cannot attack them if you can't 'see' them. Unfortunatley, they can attack you! And they can be tough - iirc, they are 5 strength (maybe including a poison attack). Scouts at least can see them, so if you have a scout around, all of the other units can then see the spider also.

Hunters are great spider killer/capturers. Note that a captured spider can be real nice, a hidden nationality, hidden unit that can kill off enemy units. Also, later in the game, a spider can create a spider pen, giving you a silk resource.

Some spiders get especially nasty because they kill warriors, get XP's, promotions, and therefore kill bigger things.

Spiders do influence the game - they are very important the strategy of in sending settlers out, since and unseen spider tackling a settler with a one or two warrior escort may get eaten! Therefore, make sure you have a scout or two around to at least see where they are.

I hope this helps!

Ok, I looked up giant spiders inthe manual. Btw, if you don't have the manual, get it!

Giant spiders are indeed 5 total strenggth, 4 + 1 poison. They spawn in jungles, forests, and ancient forests. Making them even tougher, they get a free first strike.

Best wishes,

Breunor

Also, the unit is not a hero, per se, except maybe in the arachnid world...That blue promotion it has is for +1 heroic strength, which is why it is 6/5 strength. Sometimes dungeon-spawn will have non-traditional promotions, like the Hill Giant that can summon spectres in my current game. I beast-tamed him, so he now fights for me!!

Thanks for the info guys, was just confused when spider came out of nowhere and had a fancy name. Altough i have fed about 10 warriors to it so ill let it just be :)
