I'm in an easy position to clear my continent and need advice. I have 3 knight armies and tons of cats/trebs. I'm hesitant to use my armies now because I have a great opportunity to leader-fish. Am I better off using the armies to speed up wiping out my continent, or should I studiously concentrate on redlining (with arty) and go leader fishing - thus delaying the invasion of the other continent?

Unless you are playing vanilla/PtW and want to win by 20K, I'd wipe the continent clear if I were you.

I think the answer is to do your leader fishing on the other continent. I'm uncertain because I don't remember the defense value of a knight (is it 2? ) and I don't know how close the civs on the other continent are to planes and tanks.

It matters a lot. If the best they can attack you with is cavalry then you can land a knight army on a hill over there, drop all your artillery and ground units on the same tile and do some leader fishing right there.

Some notes on how to make them bring their units up to you for fishing: To make them bring their units to you you will have to build a city. That act would of course cause them to attack the city and you will lose your protecting army. So you have to bomb out the roads first so that they cannot reach the city on the first turn. Then you build your city and give them a turn to approach you. Then you disband your city and start picking off all those units that have walked up to you.

If they have tanks they will attack the knight army. They might attack it anyway if it has only 3 knights. I just don't remember. If they have planes you will need way more than 2 knight armies.

If in your judgement, given all this, two knight armies will not hold the beachhead then I would say leader-fish on your own continent.

edit> you may want to leader fish on your own continent until you get a third army, so you can get a jump on building pentagon.

I would.... just wipe your continent.. cuz after Military tradition you can just build armies = )

Knights are 4.3.2 in vanilla; I don't have Conquest anymore, but I'm pretty sure it's the same.
