Just got around to trying this game. I see some ships pop up using fighters. Is this tech not available to the players, those events?

Even high level PD's are not able to stop them very well, what is the best way to deal with them?

I guess the question is, what are the stats for the fighters. PD's are entirely effective against missiles, but the defence is the square root of the figure against mass drivers and beam.

The name fighter is simply a class for the AI. The human player can create their own fighters, using whatever weapons etc are available. It isn't a stand alone tech.

Maybe I was not looking at things right, but it looked like the "mother ship" sent out swarms of fighters, like in Space Empires. Maybe it was a lot of tiny ships?

All I can remember for sure was that they dusted my Large design with 66 PD points, class III. My ship was much bigger than the swarms.

I had two racks of Harpoon III's to try to bust the ship and many PD III's. I tried designs with and with out things like shields and lots of armor and min armor.

Did not matter. These were Convict or Pirates. They had fleets of 8, while I had 4 fleet. I guess getting better logic tech would have helped.

Note I was taking out some ships, so their stack would go down with each battle.

Are you not able to stand off and fire long range with better missile than they have?

Ah yes, it sounds like the pirate mega event. It's a mega event for a reason, it will pretty much knock over everyone's entire military, such that it drags down to a war of attrition. At least, that's what happens with me.

You aren't able to stand off, Gal Civ combat is like Civ 1/2 combat, there is no option for artillery barrage. If there were some military starbases nearby, then that would be slightly different, in that they provide support to your side (if you built them).

The last time I faced the pirates, I had three large hulled vessels arranged in a formation to knock them out. Frequently one of my fleets could easily knock down two or more of theirs.

It surely is a Mega event, they have 32 ships. I see now that it is not that they are strong one on one, just that they have numbers. I have to see if I can figure out the formation or fleet movement aspect.

There are so many techs in the game it is going be a massive effort to get through the tree, if it can be done. I have left the last race alive to try to see more of the stuff.

BTW any way to turn off the movies you get for some events like invasion and battles? Once you have seen them a few time, that is enough for me.

If you are using large/huge hulled ships against swarms of tiny or small ships the usual recommendation is to focus on having a high attack value as opposed to a high defense value.

The swarms will eventually overwhelm your defenses eash round and you will be taking the full brunt of their firepower which will chew through your HP. In Dark Avatar your extra weapons will fire on multiple targets as you destroy the previous targets, so a high attack value will allow you to chew through the usually undefended or lightly defended tiny ships.

Yeah I saw that in Dark Avatar. The real problem was them having 37 ships in a fleet and me having 1 or 2.
