:mischief: Ive got a 256MB gfx card and can run PES5 on highest res and settings! And that is a game which is notorious hard to get running smoothly even on the highest spec systems!

I never had this fatal error before 1.52

i'm in the same boat (though not as fancy a system) - just a 128 MB intel card that ran v 1.00 fine (well, apart from the late game slow-down...which was why i got the 1.52 patch in the first place)

what gives?

i uninstalled the patch and things worked again but....anyone else run into this? any fix that would be worthwhile making?

Roofio: it definitely is their programming because the error looks awfully like a typical assert() or exception throw.

So is there any way to solve this? Or am I destined never to play my save game again...

i ran the setup and uninstalled the patch and then reinstalled v 1.00.

it worked again and allowed me to finish off my saved game

I had the same problem last night after installing the 1.52 patch. I also uninstalled (which was a story in itself because the unistall option in control panel was useless--had to insert the Civ IV disc and click on the "setup" file in Explorer), reinstalled at v. 1.00 & it seems to work ok.

I also had a problem after installing the 1.09 patch. After the opening animations, I got a message that my system was "below minimum specifications" and that Civ IV would not run. However, I know good and well that my system specs meet the listed RECOMMENDED specs and the game DID run (although the battle animations were messed up).

My thought was to install the 1.52 patch without having the intervening 1.09 patch. I'll try that and report back about whether I still get the "insufficient video memory" error we're seeing.

Well, believe it or not I got the game to work with th 1.52 patch installed; I am not getting the insufficient video memory error that is the subject of the original post. I did nothing different other than reinstalling the whole game at version 1.00 and then doing a direct install of the 1.52 patch without having the 1.09 patch previously installed. Now, I don't even have the problem I had playing the 1.09 version where I got a "below specifications" warning and the battle animations didn't play. I can't say for certain that the presence of the 1.09 patch is the problem, but it appears that way to me.

Mmm, I wonder if 1.09 updates a file that might get rolled back in 1.52 (i.e. stays the same from 1.00 to 1.52, but gets updated and not reverted from 1.00 to 1.09 to 1.52).

So another good potential to try:

deinstall, install, apply patch from 1.00 to 1.52.

(Of course, in theory binary patches/updates should not cause any problems like what I described above.)

Hey, guys, check out another thread on this subject started today under the title "Out of Video Memory????" There is a suggest fix for this problem in there.
