I don't understand a thing about the scores!!
(This is about the situation of the first GOTM.)

Smash has a 'basic' score of 818 before he captures the last city. After he captures it, he's got a score of 1140 in Civ2Gold, but a score of 1540 in the Classic version!! This means that if I use the score Civ2Gold tells me, Smash is not the winner, but Shadowdale is after all!

When you finish early you do get a bonus, so what I said earlier, that Johan511 and TimTheEnchanter should have lower scores, was wrong. But how big is this bonus? I mean, I can calculate it, but what is it based on? It's not the finishing date!! And does the GOTM scoring system, with it's multiplication for an early finish, stroke with this bonus? But than again, according to Civ2Gold, shadowdale did win...

But the problem is, I also can't really be certain, because every time I end a game where someone has finished by conquest, Civ2(gold) crashes. I only know this by capturing the last city and pressing F9 before ending the turn.

It's late here at this moment and I'm getting dissy by thinking of it! The second GOTM is almost finished and I...we need a well working scoring system!!

And at the moment I'm very busy, because I have to work whole day this monday and tuesday, and I have to make reports of experiments I've done and learn for a big exam...

But I'm tired now. The attachment is the results as I made them now. (The pictures won't work, but the results are there.) Help me, and correct me where you think is nescessary. Think about the scoring system if you can and tell me: is it good, or does it need correction??

There is something I did that may or may not be a factor.

I get to the last move.Jack my luxuries to max then save. This is the end save I sent.
But...after that,I went thru each city moving workers to water raising more trade arrows for luxuries which gave me more happy citizens here and there. This acounted for the difference in game score and my reported score.Thunderfall noticed this.It wasn't that big of a difference though!

I don't know whats going on with the different versions.I just loaded and retired a save in both versions and got the same score.

In other types of comparison games I've played,a heavier emphasis was always put on finishing date. The earlier the better.Fastest conquest or spaceship.

I found this little gem of dis-information on page 115 of the MGE manual:

"If you conquer the world before the last year of the game(2020AD),Civilization II calculates an alternative score, based on the number of rivals you've squelched and the speed at which you moved. You can earn up to 1,000 points for conquered cultures, and nearly as much for speed.Civilization II compares this alternate score to your running total and awards you the higher point value of the two."

So,running totals would most likely be discarded in favor of a conquest/speed bonus score for "fast" games and having civs destroyed by other ais would decrease your score.

I would assume 1000 points for 6 civs but maybe not>Restarting civs
The max you could conquer would be 18-so,1000>18=55.5 points per civ. That doesn't sound quite right.

"nearly as much" for the speed bonus would be,what? 800 points?.How this would be calculated is anybody's guess.

This is confusing

I'm starting to understand your dilemna.

Just gonna have to pick 1 method and stick with it.

...Well, thanks for your sympathy anyway.

About the luxury thing: that's legal. So don't worry about that.

But first thing I'm gonna do is make Civ2Gold working again, even if it means reinstalling Windows (which is probably nescessary). Then I'm going to think very hard...

I'm still not sure what is up with the scores. I know when I ended the game the first time I got a score of 134%. When I open up the save game I sent you (after capturing the last city, but before ending the turn), I get a score of 104% like you show. When I open the game right before I capture the last city, THEN end the game, I get a score of 114. I really don't understand what it is doing.

I have no idea where the other 200-300 points went, but I can no longer reproduce the 134% score I originally received. I guess next time I'll have to build a space ship!

If anyone can figure out how the scoring works on conquest/saved games, I'm sure we'd all benefit (especially Matrix!)

Hmm I remember that I thought it was funny that the score I got on my own computer didn't match the score that Matrix got when he posted it!!! But it was only a 2% difference and I had much more than the number two guy so I didn't mention it - maybe there is some things that affect the score that we don't know of yet, besides classic/MGE?????

I hope that we can solve this very soon, but about the score for the first GotM, how big a deal is it - it was only the beta/test game???

True, but we want it right for the current/second GOTM too. And if we don't solve this now, I garantee it will occur in GOTM #2 too.

I'm planning on sending Firaxis/Microprose an email, but I doubt they'll respond. But never having shot is always a miss (Dutch expression). I mean: I can at least try.

This was exactly my point. I could care less about my position in the GOTM standings for Feb. I just hope someone can figure out why this is happening so there are not any similar "issues" in future games.

If this kind of thing happens to the leaders instead of people back in the pack like me, then it could cause some strife and perhaps undermine the GOTM - which would be bad for all of us.
