How do I edit what is in it? I've added a few misspelled words and would like to take them out so i don't misspell them again and think I have it right.

Afaik the only way to edit them without an extension (at this time) is to open the persdict.dat file with notepad. The file is located in your profile folder:

Windows XP

C:\Documents and Settings\Windows User Name\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\Firefox Profile Name\

Windows Vista

C:\users\Windows User Name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\Firefox Profile Name\
