reinstalling the extensions doesn't require reinstalling the whole program. so you don't need to save anything. However, under the bookmarks menu there's an entry for 'organize bookmarks' that will allow you to save a file of them. For the add-ons, go to Tools > Add-ons and you can uninstall each of them and then add them back the way you got them originally. Which may or may not solve your problem.
If you have Norton, and its installed it's FF extension then the last update that was pushed out by Symantec will cause FF to randomly crash, therefore uninstall Norton and get a different AV program, else I'd try what Cutlass says.
it seems to be better now... I think the problem yesterday turned out that I had installed a Windows Defender Update while Firefox was running, then I never rebooted..
had trouble getting the computer to shut down last night. finally got it down, rebooted a couple of times. then I did a defragment overnight.
