What action for first contact

This is opened in lieu of dipolmacy having started on the other continent ... unless a ship was blown off coarse, into the deep blue and by Rik :worship: made landfall in the new world ... Hmmmmm ... :shakehead ... seems unlikely ...

Anyway ... what should be instructions for the appointed diplomat ???

OK I'll start

>Greetings ... ultra polite
>My what strong men you are ... are there many like you back home? ...
 just reread ... above reads like a Gay pickup
>Want to be friends?
>What do you know?
>What good stuff you got?
>Want to do business?
>better turn back ... dangerous and fierce savages running around ... very unsafe ... please turn around sir ... Now !!

Perhaps perspective diplomats would like to post us their first contact ideas ... do it as if this thread belonged to the other team ... :D

A few questions... These negotiations don't happen it the diplomacy screen, so
1. how do we share maps? (I can't imagine the tech's they'd have to give for me to like the idea of giving anyone our map)

2. How do we 'trade' luxuries?

3. what screenies might we share?

4. can we crop a map? so we show a city (it's size and such) and the surrounding area, but not give away the location on the globe or location of capital?

5. Let's be LoanSharks!! (if they're dumb enough to fall for it)

Same as normal game ... but you only see your screen

<Pick Trades> then press ACCEPT then press SEND ... automatic deal
<Pick Trades> then press SEND ... requires them to accept

Actually takes a little to get used to ... I or Classical_Hero could send screenies if people require a tutorial ...

Interestingly the Intel gleaned is quite sparse compared to normal game ... only know what from your Tech List that the rival has ...
ie If shows then Rival doesn't have ... if absent then they already know ...

You don't know how many (if any) new techs the rival has ... only through espionage

Okay. there's the regular in-game trade stuff. But from earlier discussion I understand it is common to trade things not offered by the game, like screenies. What are some of these like?

I have only sent a screenie once ... it was a map to show the player where I would be picking up the workers i traded for tech ... I also indicated that it would take some time for me to arrive and 'convert' the workers into slaves so in the interim we agreed to them to be used to build a road at 1gp per turn per unit ... brilliant

I can see other uses ... Maps to indicate where we want allies to attack while we attack the other flank sort of instructions ...

It may be nicer  to send jpegs of selected areas of our empire rather than to send territory or world maps ... the diplomat should ensure the wording was correct for this type of interaction ...

Other interactions could be to request allies to block enemy movement with their 'neutral' units ... ie. they just keep getting in the way ... oops

or to loan a military unit for XX turns ... and then send it orders to clear barbs nests or guard a resource that we will be gaining access to from an eager rival

lurker's comment: .... Have you read the rules lately ? ;)
1.6 - Invalid Map Trading

Description: No team or individual is permitted to barter, gift, or otherwise trade any sort of map, whether it be a screen shot, minimap, hand drawing, or any other 'picture' of the in-game map, mini-map, or embassy screenshot before the requisite tech is discovered. Verbal/text descriptions are allowed, but coordinates are not.

Definition: A team creating screen shots, drawings, or other depictions of any part of the in-game map before the requisite tech has been discovered.

Purpose: To prevent the use of outside game elements to break the spirit of the game by allowing maps to be traded before they are allowed in-game.

Verdict: Using this exploit or any other exploit that allows any map trading before the tech is discovered through any means is a violation of this rule.

Punishment Level: Once – Orange (1-5 Turns), Repeat Offense - Red (2-20 Turns)

I always assumed this was obvious :) ... No Trading before discovery/trade/appropriation  of the Map Making tech or as soon as the Territorial and World Maps became visible on our trade screen ... (I actually use the latter as a better guide)

The Area or Frontier Maps would not be doctored in anyway ... just specific areas ... eg. Western Boarder ... symbolic of getting a whole map and tearing the vital piece off to carry ;)

I could also see 'censored' maps with Government Sponsored No Go Areas painted Official Black ... would these be considered OK ???

EDIT - They would clearly indicate prefered routes for ally units to traverse when moving through our lands ... ie. ROP

fe: map-trading now requires navigation

If we meet a civ, we contact the other team. The Foreign Minster appoints a ambassador (or does this part himself) and contact a team memeber and asks to meet with a goverment offical. We talk with them, and just say hello and everything, and set up a meeting date where we can start to talk about other stuff. At this meeting we talk about what they need, and what we need. We go from there.

Welcome to our new friends from across the world. May we invite you to a special party where we shall be serving all the best doughnuts our cheffs have to offer. We also would be proud to let our world renounded graffiti artists paint your rusty boat. :D

I would suggest we start by asking them what corner they are in. That is allowed isn't it?

it should be allowed since it isn't map coordinates its just a description of the area technically

we should send them a greeting card or something like peace offers to you neighboors may you prosper and live long

I also suggest that along with a quick opening note (to buy us time really) we send them these links:

wiki said:
A doughnut, or donut, is a deep-fried piece of dough or batter. The two most common types are the torus-shaped ring doughnut, and the filled doughnut, a flattened sphere which is injected with jam/jelly or another sweet filling. A small piece of dough, roughly the size of the middle of a ring doughnut can be cooked as a doughnut hole.

I can't remember what insane impulse drove me to try making raised doughnuts at home. After all, they're so inexpensive you have to wonder why anyone would bother. Yet attempt making them I did... and failed miserably. They were greasy, chewy lumps that I wouldn't feed to a dog.

The ministry of spying on people and looking through glasses should also note that they will soon find heron and may then know we have at least 3 cities (depending on their top 5 cities)

Damned good point about what they know ... grrrr

OK ... We have appointed diplomats ... both teams are requesting IM ... Instant Messaging ... I am not very applied in such knowledge ... so need advice and input

1. I believe that this can be more than 1 on 1 ... yes?
2. Do we want a meeting of gangs (multi-chat)?
3. Can there be secret lurkers at a IM?
4. If multi-chat ... is everyone welcome?

Any thoughts on the above IM protocols ??? ... I am a bit ignorant on this mode of communication ... have AIM (fe3333au) and that is all ...

I am completely ignorant as well. I really want the ability to secretly lurk... listening in over the shoulder of the guy on the phone...

Yet I may not be able to... I run a pretty old browser at home. Netscape 6
