ok, this will be my first regent game ever, and i was wondering what civilization i should be, play against, etc...

also, what should i focus on, like what great wonders should i get or just not bother with, and does favorite government type really help that much?? democracy always seemed to be the way to go, unless they hate it...

any other hints for me will be helpful, since i have only played cheiftan before

You really don't need to build any of the Ancient age wonders. Since you only have a 20% bonus in production over the AI, you need to concentrate on expanding. Democracy isn't really good because of the high war weariness. Once the zulu declared war on me and i got war weariness after three turns. You should switch to monarchy to republic and stay there for the rest of the game. You might want to play as Persia, France, or Egypt for your first game. Favorite government type does not help. I'm pretty sure the better players will have some more useful advice.

Well, that depends on your choice of maps. Go for continents if you are a newbie at regent level. Pangaea might get you killed fast. If you play on smaller scale map, you should take a civ with ancient unique units, like Aztecs, Romans, Persians or Mayans. Be fast in building settlers and if you are next to another civ, be as brutal as you can and take them out early on.
Democracy is horrible, don't go for it. War weariness is a real problem, your cities don't support any units (so they eat your income) and what's worse, at the moment you research it, unless you're a religious civ, being in anarchy for 5 turns is very bad. You might not even be able to build some middle ages wonders.
As for early wonders I always go for Colossus if possible, Pyramids, Great Library and Mausoleum of Maussolos. Don't go for any other, like Hanging Gardens or Great Wall. Leave them to the AI. Or if you play warmonger style, simple ditch the wonder building and build units instead. Get a fair amount on income, switching to republic when you have it and build units like crazy. If you have some good units and horses&iron, the world will be yours.

First off, remember that the AI civs are going to do everything twice as fast as before. They can now build, grow, and research as fast as you can, so you might be in for a little bit of a shock. Also, every citizen after the second will be unhappy, so you'll need to make greater use of the luxury slider than before.

It might be best not to bother with wonders at first; in the early game, shields and turns are better spent on workers, settlers, units, and some improvements than on wonders. What'll help you more: the Great Wall, or 10 settlers? Once you've expanded and built up your military and infrastructure, a few wonders might be helpful. In the Middle Ages, Leo's Workshop is probably the best, followed by Sun Tzu's, then the science wonders and maybe Bach's (but only if you can't get enough luxuries). That assumes you plan to do a fair bit of warmongering, of course.

The AI's favorite government type affects diplomacy a little bit. Basically, if you and the AI are in the same gov other than their favorite, you get a small diplomatic bonus; if you're both in the AI's favorite gov, you get a large bonus; and if you're in the AI's least favorite gov, and the AI's not, you get a large penalty. I ignore that and stay in Republic myself. Republic is a good government to stay in, though since you're playing vanilla, you might want to revolt to democracy later if you're religious. Then again, maybe not--you have to research two optional techs to get it.

As for civs, you really can't go wrong with the three that civverguy suggested, but if you want to fight a lot, you might try China or the Iroquois, both of which have excellent unique units. Now if you were playing Conquests, the Iroquois would probably be the best choice since they have a far stronger trait combo than in vanilla or PTW.

China is my usual choice, that or Russia, and i got my highest score with China, 1700 some...which isn't that good, but i won in like the 1500s or 1700s, and got a domination vicorty, which i wasn't planning. if i kept going i might have gotten 3000

anyway, ill try Iroquois, since i like em and i don't normally use em, thanks

Just start with whatever Civ has worked best for you so far, then the next best, and so on. :)

I love Democracy myself, but I am in the minority here. The conventional wisdom is that you should think twice about researching (or buying) two optional techs at higher levels. Try it and judge for yourself. :) As for wonders, you'll find wonder-building much more difficult here too, as the AI will be building them faster, and will beat you to the punch more often. Choose wisely.

Yeah. BUILD UP YOUR MILITARY! The AI will be more aggressive, and quicker to anger.

democracy isn't horrible - yes, you get no unit support, but you also pay less per unit. And you get some less corruption, plus faster workers, so you need fewer of those.

It's usually not worth the switch unless you are religious, though.

3 most important things about regent:
1. Learn how to build a settler factory.
2. Pay attention to citizen moods -cities will start to riot at size 3 if you do nothing.
3. Build many fewer wonders.

1. Learn how to build a settler factory.

How could I forget about settler factories? Bah! :wallbash: Settler factories became an integral part of my early game almost right after I moved up from Chieftain. With a Granary and an excellently productive city, you can generate a settler every four turns.

democracy always seemed to be the way to go, unless they hate it...

it doesn't matter if "they hate it". that designation influences whether the ai would choose that government but does not give the player any penalty for choosing that government when playing with that civ.

oh thx, now i won't worry about being democracy and Russia anymore, lol

As good an advice as you can ask for. I never really advanced to Emperor before I learned these important lessons :(

Actually, you might not want to build any wonders in the first few games..let the AI build them than capture them later :goodjob:
