PC Gamer (UK) gives it 92%, which comming from a journal which errs on the harsh, is pretty ecstatic:crazyeye:

Could you provide us all with a link to the review you found so everyone else can read it too? :)

its a magazine, so no link

the review text really doesn't contain any surprises, except to say its as buggy as hell

so it got 92% DESPITE being buggy

It's good to see that (although early) we've yet to see a negative review (or even preview, but those are less likely to be negative). Looks like they seem to have hit a home run with it.

But only if the 'bugs' are minor ones and they get fixed easily and quickly. Games that should have been a hit...have turned into failures becuase of terrible bugs

Does the magazine list the website address of the magazine's homepage? If it's online it should be able to be found from there.

How can they ahdn out a 92% if a game is buged?

Bugs are probably nr1 spoiler in a game. I find that review rather hard to swallow and i cant say i really trust there 92%. I only trust my own judgement, and the PU in Holland hasnt really let me down as of yet.

How buggy is buggy I wonder?

Anyway, I'll pick up PC Gamer tomorrow when it goes on sale (damn you subscribers!). Should be good. I like their reviews.

Reviewers are like cattle, all moving in the same direction as the other. When a game is hyped enough, they act hyped. I don't trust any of them.

Civ IV will be good though :)

Hey - long time reader, first time poster.

I am pretty sure that the review in PC Gamer UK is based on a preview version. A danish magazine which I find has higher standards than the most came out to subscribers last week (on the streets thursday) and they had a preview of Civ IV. They stressed that they wanted to publish a review, but the material they got from Firaxis wasn't the finished product. They frequently publish reviews a month after the release date, because they haven't gotten their hands on the finished version yet.

So I am assuming that the perfect swedish review we saw, this one from PC Gamer UK and the preview in my local magazine were all based on the same non-finished version of Civ IV.

IMO, PC Gamer here in America seems to have an excellent grading system for games. In most cases, in my experience, whenever I played a game that they reviewed I could see why they gave out the grade they gave that game.

Since I'm a subscriber, I look forward to seeing what PC Gamer gives CIV. I bet that it'll be something we can all agree with, even if the grade is lower than expected. :mischief:

Well said. Half the reviews you will see in the coming weeks will be bits and pieces of other reviews. Some people arent even sharp enough to reword them well enough.

On a side note this game looks solid.

from PC Gamer, dec 2005:

"I've run into a series of bugs, frustrating crashes, that hit towards the end of a game...... it tells you something about the quality of the game that im prepared to disregard such problems"

Eh, there have been some hyped games that have received mixed reviews (and by mixed I don't mean average, I mean some very good and some very bad.) I never trust reviews as much for their analysis of the game but for just different bits of info I might not have found elsewhere, especially prior to release.

If it's a paper magazine the reason it's buggy is most likely because they have to have the review finished months before the actual release of the game and are hence playing pre-release builds.

they only review finished games

I find that hard to believe when the game went gold a week ago. You can not review civilization in a week, and that's not even taking into account the lead times magazines require.

Sure they do. The game went Gold exactly a week ago. In that time, they've played enough games to completion to write a decent review, and then done layout of the magazine, got it to the printer who then printed it and then shipped it to the newsstand you bought it at?

Riiiight.
