Maybe this will help someone.
Opened a brand new box for Civ 4, & popped the CD straight into the computer.
I tried to install Civ 4, about 3 or 4 times. But each time I'd get a "CRC Error" while running disk 2. This reminded me of a problem I had with MS Office, so I tried copying the cab file directly to my hard drive... but alas it was not meant to be. I'd just get another "CRC Error" while copying.
I took a good look at the back of the CD and noticed a dried smudge on the back. About 1/16"x1/8" on the very outer edge. Tried to scratch it off, and that seemed to help somewhat... then I doused the CD with Windex (remember, clean form the center out, like spokes on a wheel).
You can still see the smudge, but the CD now installs & the Cab files now copy without error. At least I don't have to go back to the store.
IMHO: Something damaged/smudged the disk when it was pressed. Which makes me wonder about the manufacturing companys Q&A... & how many returns will have to be eaten because of it.
damo, c'est la vie
