Since we are at war with the Iroquois we must consider asking for aid from other nations.

Rome will sign a military alliance with us against the Iroquois for Polytheism (and only Polytheism, we don't have enough gold)

Since we don't have an embassy with anyone else we can't ask for their assistance. Strangely enough though, this war has made the Romans cautious towards us, instead of annoyed. Maybe they are at odds with the Iroquois as well? It will be a while before the Iroquois would be polite enough to sit down at the negotiating table with us, unless we can capture some of their cities.

What do the citizens of Japanatica want? Ask Rome for help, establish an embassy with Babylon (or anyone else) or just brave it out by ourselves.

Capture an Iriquois city??? Their cities are too far away to spend the time marching there to fight then. Also, we dont need to go after them, if they want to, they can come to us. No sense in going all that way for some corruption stricken cities. Anyway, Rome looks like it might have an archer come at us. A war with Rome is worth our time, a war with the Iriquois is a waste of resources.

Well, we can try to fight a war of attribution. We should play a defensive war and pray that they dont have any horses.

we dont need to do much at all, they will probably attack with 5 units at most and then will want peace

My reasoning is the longer we stay at war with the Iroquois the more chance they get allies against us. After all, we don't want another Domino War do we? Capturing one of their cities would bring them to the peace table sooner.

I do not think that we should surrender peace unless we gain at least some gold (1 would suffice) from it.

One thing I notice about AI is that it won't really participate in war that much unless it's on a high "momentum". Let the Iriquois starve themselves out. A war might damage their economy. And we'll be here, acting like nothing has happened.

EDIT: After checking the maps, I see that Allegheny has Iron. If we should take only one city, it will be their thin, western flank.

My personal opinion is that bringing Rome or Babylon into the War could be disastrous - if they manage to capture a few Iroquois cities they could grow quite rapidly. Likewise if the Iroquois managed to defeat them (which they quite possibly could do, particularly against Rome) they'd grow too strong, and that's not something we want either) I'm with CivGeneral - play defensive. Build some swordsmen to take out their archers when they come, and just keep spearmen for defense. When we've got enough swordsmen, send them to an outlying city, capture it and then sue for peace.

We can always fight a "Phony war", although it won't work as well as DG2. In DG2, Persia was on the FAR end of the landmass (Babylon was just as far away on the opposite end, along with the Iroquois), and units had to spend a good 100 turns getting to the other side (Babylon sent 40 longbows that game, and got hurt - badly). Here, it's more like 15. We should build a few swords, and fend off their first wave of attacks. We need to get Zojoji (sp?) hooked up after the iron (perhaps a mine?). This will give us another sword city. We should try for peace as quickly as possible (i.e., taking a fringe city with no culture and size 1). Sometimes the AI will back down really quickly if even 1 city is doomed. Perhaps this can be a catalyst to attacking Rome, or Babylon.

Taking a fringe city with no culture and size 1 would raze it and thus harm our chances of getting a diplomatic victory late on, correct? (I could be wrong)

I have captured size 1 cities without razing, tho' only rarely. I agree that the best line is play defensive with a few swordsmen. Would be good to get a few horsemen too to counter a mounted assault. One final note: We should establish an embassy with Babylon at some stage. If the Romans and Iroquois decide to ally against us, we will need some backup.

Giving Polytheism for alliance is bad thing. I also agree we should play defensive war. We might send 2 spearman to iroquies, to pillage iron and horses. Moving them carefully over the hills, forests and mountains will keep them alive.
Another thing. Rome is getting strong. They already have many cities on good locations. If they improve their land and increase growth and production fast enough they will be hard to beat. We should use this war to build our army and make peace with iros asap. Than send army straight to Rome.

We only need to pillager their horses and play defense. Everything else I can agree with. Swords, swords, and more swords. However, is Rome near any iron?

At this point in the game we should be able to repel what attack the Iroquois attempt and continue to expand. No need to get into a protracted war, get a reasonable peace as soon as possible. This is a sign however that we need to increase the military by about 1 or 2 units per city to make ourselves less of a target.

from the military minister.

There is no need for a long protracted war for an enemy we can barely reach with long supply lines. I suggest we defend ourselves and cool off, and prepare for invading the encircling Romans within a certain time.

I will therefore ask the Japanatican people for the following:

Patience
Audacity

Commitment to build defensible cities targeted on one future enemy and to avoid sprawl and difficult infrastructure, and to avoid sticking cities between other neighbors and place ourselves in many civilizations harms way.

"Like it or not history is on our side, we will Bury them"

Well i had lots to say everyone has already said it. Lets let them attack us, make our spearmen elite and then give us there technology for peace. ................... But never forget this and one day we will bury them.
