FREE Font Creator

I want to know if there are any good, free font creators out there that can be used by someone with no real programming experience (no Java, etc.). And I would really like it to be free.

A quick Google search revealed Font Forge, an open source app which seems it could do the job. I am actually downloading it myself to see how it might work.

After trying installation, it seems you would be much better off if you use Linux, or possibly Mac OS X. If you are using Windows, it won't be quite the same. Nevertheless I shall persevere...

For the Linux variants, would the program be able to save as a file format that is recognizable in Windows?

i'd imagine it would save as truetype. i downloaded a font maker ages ago but never used it.
