It's most likely not a problem with the game itself.
Try to see if there are any events which trigger the freeze, ie you discover a certain technology, try to build a certain unit, etc. Maybe there's a missing file that's causing it.

There is a patch that fixes crashes on XP and 2000 (at least for some people). I think it's available on Firaxis webpage.PlutonianEmpire said:

It freezes on me only when I reload a saved game. When I quit the game entirely and restart the program and load the saved game, an error message pops up, forcing SMAC to close.
