Future tech

What are the advantages of researching future tech? Couldn't the GPT be used for better things, like building or happiness?

I am playing the basic Civ III.

Future techs are only good for score, and they aren't very good at that, anyway.

Future techs add a bit to your score. But each one's value is so small, they aren't worth researching. You would be better off, as you said, to turn your luxury slider up, make everyone happy, and rush buildings. You'll get points for having people happy too, so future techs aren't really worth it.
