We play Civ III on steam. But we experience that far in the game, cities stop producing units that it should be building. Is this bug or known issue? What to do?
Are you playing on Large-Huge(+?) maps, either at high difficulty level and/or with additional Civs modded in? If so, you've likely hit the game's hardcoded unit-limit (8192 units total for all Civs).
The only way round this is to install one of the more recent versions of the C3X patch, written and maintained by @Flintlock. You can find it in the Downloads section; the Discussion thread is on the front page of the C&C subforum.

As tjs282 posted, the only way to fix the MUA problem (Maximum Units Allowed) is playing with the Flintlock´s C3X mod. I want to add, that you can use playing with the C3X mod in any stage of a C3C game. So even your current game in its late stage can be spared from the MUA. Simply install the C3X mod and start the next turn in your game (or the turn before the MUA appeared for the first time) and the C3X mod is working if installed properly.
