G-Major 40

Even getting archery straight away with Cyrus (starts with hunting), I didn't have enough fogbusters to hold off the barbs without sacrificing my development. This was the first time I survived without having a city razed by 1000BC!

Anyway, I am going to try Hannibal but it looks like I got a strange bug with my first map (I'll post in the HOF Q&A thread I think)... mountains in the starting locations BFC with forests on them????

EDIT: Next map, things are so much easier with Hannibal + Great Lighthouse. Only 3 tiles in fog on my island and am about to do some ICS type of thing I think. 3 cities so far but it's only 1000BC.

Well, played up to 1475AD last night, and I have to say it is looking doable with Hannibal. I've ICS'd to a whole 7 cities now ;) However, everyone except Brennus likes me (pleased or friendly), and I have some solid allies at +10 or +11. So I'm teching radio and then mass media for the UN, have a great engineer stashed to speed up the build. EDIT: First to liberalism as well, taking scientific method ;)

But... several colonies were spawned... how does that affect the AI attitude to vote for you for a UN win? Does the vassal vote the same way as the master? I know vassals will vote for their master always but it looks like the opponent will be Asoka who hasn't made a colony yet.

Vassals will vote for their master if he is one of the candidates. Otherwise they will vote along the same lines as any AI player based on diplo numbers.

So, what VC are people working towards? I keep finding myself so far behind in techs by mid-game even if I can trade to an early tech lead that I really have no chance at any type of win.

If I grab a lot of land I default to UN. That's exactly what happened here. Immortal is still hard for me, after all...although I'm starting to keep up.

Before I run out of time I'll probably go for a more ambitious/competitive submission, though I do doubt my ability to truly contend for 500k+ which will be needed just to place...

This is going to jinx me, but... my first attempt on this one is going pretty well. I'm playing Julius, and going for a domination victory with sid's sushi to pad the score. So far so good, I've got 22% land at 940 (i think) ad. Poised to take a few more cities during my current war w/ Lincoln, then I'll wait for rifling.

Sid's Sushi really helps w/ the score, I had one on the HOF table from it, 400k, that just got topped. A domination win w/ Sids plays on the 2 biggest score modifiers, population and land area.

I think higher scores could be reached with Cereal Mills on a land map (i.e. lakes, great plains, etc.). Less sea tiles=more land to take so more cities can be built for more population. The large map and Immortal level make this a challenge though. Unclethrill did better than me generating maps with maximum opponents. I generated a lot of maps with minimum opponents and they spread out way too fast!

Well, I'm still not dead yet at 1756AD in my game. Built the UN, but need to reduce Brennus' votes I think since I have infantry and he doesn't have rifles yet. Although boating troops oveer might be a worry since he has Ships of the Line and I can't build frigates (no iron). No oil either ;) Hardly any on this map.

I'm glad I didn't get a cheesy UN win in a way because if I did it wouldn't have felt like a well earned first Immortal win unlike my first Emperor win which had me buzzing ;)

I'll try and finish this game one way or the other tonight.

EDIT: Have medicine and about a 60% chance to pop a GM for Sushi in the next 7 turns too, fingers crossed.

I'm playing on Pangea and got a ton of fish type resources through trades. I grabbed a bunch of land and used what extra resources I got to trade for them (later of course, when you can get multiple fishes from a single ai). It just seems like the resources needed for Sushi are more abundant than the ones for Cereal, even tho the food multiplier is better for Cereal. Plus Sushi gives you culture, which is nice for domination.

I did minimum opponents too, I got lucky and rolled a map where I had some room to expand and I settled 4 cities (so five total) to start. Very pleased with how my game is going, it's going pretty much just as I hoped it would, aside from a few setbacks. I've tried to get a good score for the HOF on emperor with a large or huge map and they all turned out to be a total wash, so I'm stoked that an immortal one is going ok.

Also, playing with high seas, and less land area, means less land you need to reach the domination limit. Both the population and the land area score modifiers go by how much you could possibly get. So a map with less land and more water means you need that much less for the domination win and a high score.

I did minimal opponents in my first 2 runs but IMO the 17 guys make it easier to beat them without one getting too large. Diplo is a bit harder but so what?

Gave up on my 5th attempt, no way I was going to win before Jaoa launched. His capital was also too well defended to consider razing it later.

Diplo was hampered by all the colnies that were created.

I think the plan was solid though, Hannibal/archipelago/Great Lighthouse made it much easier than my other attempts with Cyrus. I sshould have REXed better after GLH especially overeas. No oil was the killer, I could have eliminated Brennus easily if I had oil. As it was I had 1 source of rice and Standard Ethanol, but the rice city kept going into revolt.

I couldn't seem to get any decent resources with any of the starts I tried recently.

My attempt didn't turn out in the score I was hoping for. It wound up taking a really long time, and also I may have been gauging it based on my previous tries for a high score this way which were played on marathon, as opposed to epic.

But I'm in first right now, and I'm leaving for Christmas on Monday. So, the score to beat at the moment is 251,518.

Good luck to all, happy holidays, and I hope you all finish under 250,000. :p

26th of december where in the world? I'll be able to beat 250K if i just manage to trudge through a game...
Stealing a worker and getting 4 cities with iron around turn 70 doesn't seem hard, however my luck after that have just been crap... in my first atempt 3 other civs got bribed into war against me. I could easily have won the game, but the big finish was probably hard to get. In the second game i had really bad luck with my assult and lost some crucical battles leading the first(and most crucial) war to take 20 turns longer than expected... Probably going to play that one out, Zara have an insane capital with tripple gems and pyramids, and he is not really very far off...

5 pm cst = 1 am the 27th gmt +2 right ? I'll probably be done with my game by then.

Played a bit on. Taking out Zara was surprisingly easy(i actually had an army by the time i attacked him though). Getting Mids was nice and his capital doesn't hurt(tripple gems + stone + a food resource)... Got 8 commerce resources empire wide now and elephants(silver in capital, a couple gold and 5 gems)... Hopefully someone else than ghandi research MC soon so i can trade for it(he got it from oracle). Used plundered money and money gotten from trading obsolete techs to fuel my research. Almost at CS, I am still making positive at 0% and my capital is in the progress of getting cottaged up... Still no courthouses anywhere, but i am organized so shouldn't take too long. Also got incense, spice dye and banana and traded for calendar alread(as well as construction and a boatload of other techs). Judeaism, founded by asoka is the major religion and i am in it, hopefully that will help me avoid wyfba despite getting you decleared on our friend negatives. With the 4 cities i started with, 3 from hatty and 4 more from Zara i am at 11 cities. Should get 5-6 more for lizzy, though she does have some anoying walls and axes, but catapults should help against that(I also got two gg's so far meaning two of my cities are making level 3 units out of the gate).

Lizzy dead, paper CS and philo in and halfway through education. My capital is making 115 beakers now(this produced almost all the units to take out hatty + zara alone, double irrigated corn + silver + iron + tin in a plains hill mine(how lucky) and double plains riverside hills. Rest is mostly grassland riverside(that i chopped, with quite a bit of regrowth into a massive army). Playing against the AI is rather silly... You actually gain more from the wars than you lose in troops, not only cities but also workers... Well over 300 beakers now and 16 cities AD's soon aproaching... I guess i should have thought a bit ahead and delayed trading away paper for philo so i could sling communism of liberalism, but oh well...

Ghandi out... Praets work just fine(together with cats) against maces and lbows... ehem. I guess next war will be with grens and cannons. Saying 300K if i finish this turn.. Still can't decide what to lib for. Options are communism, biology and steel... 20ish cities now, well over 500 raw bpt at 100% Just passed the AD's. Noone else have education apparently so i can relax a bit(and most people have machinery), Still i need to tech chemistry before i got any nice lib targets(though i guess i could always lib chem), teching PP now...

I finished my game.. now was i in time to submit? 770K score... I wasn't even trying to milk, just playing as fast as possible towards the end, getting over the dom limit in time was hard enough(automated all my cities and workers towards the end)... Probably would have beaten 1M if i tried...

Looks like my subbmission won't make it in, in time... My connection here is awfully slow and as such uploading even a 500 Kb save is hard...

Finally managed to upload the save, but 15 min too late accoriding to denniz...

The most impressive to me was that i used right under 9 hours while ironhead used over 76 hours! Though as i said my entry was rather suboptimal towards the end, loads of shift + enter. Will probably do a writeup later if people wants...

After ghandi i said i decided to tech cannons and grens, this is not entierly true... First Asoka vassalized voulentarily(since i was on time constraint i accepted despite it probably leading to lower final score), later on mansa also vassalized voulentarily. I started taking out darius the turn i got liberalism(325 AD, I traded away education when i was 7 turns from liberalism because the AI then had massive amount of gold i wanted, I libed for communism which got me a gspy to start my first GA to allow me to switch civics for free(my first civic switch since burrecracy making for 3 turns of revolt total this game), i got into free religion(never used pacifism OR or theocracy though they might have benefited me some), state property(that really made my economy power up, together with the GA) and caste system(serfdom might have been better but the ability to run artists was helpful if nothing else, I also generated a few GP's after this point, though in general GP usage was very poor throught the game, i spent my first GS on an academy, used another to bulb chemistry and after that 6 went to golden ages(the last two were very late, one to switch into nationalism and one to switch to free speech))). He fell quickly to what was then an army of trebs and praets with a few muskets and some maces. I also had some knights by the time it was over(stole guilds from mansa with EP i think). I took out pacal(who was already at war with roosvelt and fredrick) with mostly knights and the rest of my praets + assorted army(the knights blitzed through and took most of the cities i belive, pacal didn't have engineering so i could just smash knights up against his Lbow defended cities and hope for the best). I captured 4 of pacals 5 cities in 4 turns i belive, however he vassaled to roosvelt before i could vassalize him(or take his last city) by myself...

This vassalization gave me a bit of a problem(in hindsight it wasn't really much so), since if i wanted to take out roosvelt next this ment having pacal in my back, This wouldn't really have been a problem since pacal was very weak but whatever, i don't like having defense in my cities :p. I teched biology before steel so i didn't get any cannons until about the time i was ready for the next war(upgraded what was left of the trebs from the darius + pacal war, i should probably have brought cats since they deal better colleteral and my trebs just died anyways). The next war was against pacal, I captured 3 cities on the first turn, mostly with knights and another couple in 2 more turns. Then it was a bit of a trek to his inner cities but eventually he capitulated too.. Ramsess who was his vassal also capitluated after taking a couple of his cities. By this time i automated all my workers and cities, this probably dropped my research rate considerably since i was generating wealth in a few cities(as well as running loads of merchants) hence not allowing me to continue with really high slider anymore, but the goal was just to finish by the deadline not to milk the most anymore. This is also why i decided to go for roosvelt next despite the fact that not going for him would probably have increased my final score by a couple 100K(since i would have hit the dom limit later). His 4 cities fell quickly(in like 5 turns since one of my stacks ment for one of his cities had a run in with a mini sod and hence didn't have enough firepower left to take out the last city by itself). On the turn i won i also killed pacal just for good measure. I drafted a few rifles to speed up the war, although this probably decreased my final score, same with running free speech and setting all my cities to run culture last couple of turns.

As mentioned my capital was a monster producer and burrecracy capital. It generated 100-200 beakers in the midgame(for most of the game i was running 100% due to begged/traded/plundered gold), it was my only cottage city(though i guess zaras capital with double gems can be called a commerce city as well), the rest was farmed(and eventually windmilled).

I used pretty much all my early game EP to steal masonery and polyetism from elizabeth, later i ignored her with EP since she had invested quite a bit against me to counter my EP, I also stole guilds and optics i belive as well as monotheism towards the end.

An example of how much gold i got from the AI:

@ Denniz: I have some intermideate saves, is there any way to get those into the hof? I didn't dare upload them together with the submission since my connection was so poor... I see that the combat log for the early turns are missing, this would probably be fixed if i gave you all the saves...
