While the general Hall of Fame is an ongoing competition, we like to run time-definite competitions between updates that we call Gauntlets. Standard Hall of Fame rules (*) still apply, but any games meeting the settings will be counted towards the Gauntlet.

(*) Please read the >> HOF rules << BEFORE playing!

Settings:
  • Expansion: Brave New World
  • Victory Condition: Culture (though all victory conditions must be enabled)
  • Difficulty: Deity
  • Map Size: Standard
  • Map Type: Frontier
  • Speed: Quick
  • Leader: Any
  • Opponents: Any
  • Version: SV8
  • Date: 17th January to 16th February 2016
The earliest finish date wins, with score as a tiebreaker.

Well, first (real) attempt was a massive failure. The Frontier map seems to be really really shy on luxaries, across ~10 starts none had more than 2 accessible ones (usually 2 in capital and literally never a single one for an expansiopn). I always end up falling behind early because of having to go into crap like coliseums and I never really recover as I can't get any early wonders and growing is difficult. Maybe I should just go OCC or something...

Anyway, I got screwed at the end when I didn't realize that musicians are bugged on quick speed. Thought I would win next turn so declared war and popped it but ended up being ~700 short meaning I would have to wait 7 turns because of losing diplomat. When I was 1 turn away from influential he completed a space victory. This is actually the first time ever that I lost to a space victory, but it was a really really slow win in the first place (would have been turn 210).

I want to try Futurism here. Futurism doesn't get scaled down on Quick if I remember correctly, so it should be pretty powerful, perhaps more than Freedom's 34% bonus if the game ends fast enough. Would be interesting to try as Maya, but I think Babylon will be my first choice here, as they get to ideologies and Internet faster.

Be warned though. The great musician concert tour modifier for Quick speed is applied twice, so if you have 400 tourism, a bomb would be worth 400*10*0.66*0.66~1795

edit: Emtee already mentioned it

Tip for dealing with Frontier: The map is HUGE. Really unusually large. It probably makes sense to go with high sea levels, to scale things down a bit -- I believe everyone on the King/Frontier/Science gauntlet ended up using high seas. The decreased land area should concentrate luxuries a bit more, at least in theory.

Probably I won't try, but if, I'd try Brazil; on good map (and isn't HoF about it?) quick win only with futurism and Brazil's own 'internet' - golden age should be very doable.

Barbs have been a real pain in the couple of starts I tried - quick/deity/no neighbours means you get swarmed with hand-axes pretty quickly. I think quick 2-city NC might be one of the better openers here for Tradition.

What climate/world age is everyone choosing? My favourite so far has been Temperate/Arid/5 billion, normally I'd pick 4 billion but Frontier seems to have enough hills regardless.

Got a T164 CV as Babylon. 2-city NC into 4-city Tradition/Aesthetics/Rationalism/Futurism. Ahmad was my runaway AI with 14330 culture. Others didn't do too well and passive tourism + futurism was actually enough to become influential over them. Mongolia attacked me at some point but otherwise I had a peaceful game, stole just one worker from a CS.

Mistakes:

- Finishing Aesthetics after getting Secularism (had Aesthetics 2 pre-Renaissance). Should've taken Free Thought first at least.
- Losing control of World Congress very early; World's Fair got voted down and then I couldn't propose anything afterwards. I got lucky and Enrico proposed CHS later. It took long to find all the CS and it was hard to compete with the AI gold anyway. I had Mongolia, Austria and Venice in my game, hoping they'd kill some cultural CS, but that didn't really help - there were four cultural CSs and only one of them was captured by Mongolia. Enrico got Tyre and some other CS late in the game, and Maria Theresa didn't do anything.

Science benchmarks: Education T72 (w/ Engineering detour for a trade route), Radio T111. Not sure how good this is, science felt slow comparing to what I'd expect to have with Babylon by (turn number)*1.5 on Standard. AIs seemed to be a bit slow as well, I got Machu Picchu, LToP, GT, Sistine and Taj Mahal without any real competition.

I'll try Brazil next. Will likely invest some policies into Patronage now.
