Game keeps freezing up

My Civ 4 game keeps freezing up and I can't understand why.
Computer specs :
Pentium 4
2.8 GHz
2.0 GB of RAM
Nvidia Geforce 5200
XP OS

I have installed the new patch, but I still can't play the game.
I notice under Task Manager that the Civ 4 game uses
around 600,000 kb of Processes Mem usage.

Can any one help?

Does it freeze when you start the game or what?
