I like the modern period of CivIII the best. Before long, either you or the computer are nearing victory conditions. I wish the game could last longer. Yes, I know after victory you can still play. There are so many things that can happen in modern times that spice up the game.
-Cold war/nuclear arms race.
-Economic development/trade/conflict.
-Terrorism.
-Levels of space flight/development.

Actually, what if we started a CivIV game, industrial age to nano age (Similar to Call to Power) with space stations, rail guns, computer technological advances (TRS-80 ranging to artificial intelligence), build space stations, shuttle program, hypersonic (low space orbital plane/space ship flights), levels of economic development (stock market, realestate) use these to pay for hyperexpensive programs), human development advances (human rights, civil rights) which creates happiness. Civil law should pay the way to a new ball park of economic development. These things should pave the way to a whole new, order of magnitude, level of political, economic development.

There should be more detailed diplomatic treaties (nuclear non proliferation, economic cooperation, creation of alliances such as NATO, Warsaw Pact). In the same way that the United States can exert political pressure on countries, diplomacy should include an abililty to demand a lowering of human rights abuses in other countries, force or fight for changes in governments of other countries. Fascist countries should have incentives to not want to change.

Lets spend more time in the post industrial through nano tech age.

The main point of Civ games (in my opinion) is to see what a long hard road it is to become the dominant civ. I mean, it is fun to run over all opposition with tanks and nuke the hell outta everyone, but how'd you get there? Through building your Civ.
