From what I just experienced, I have fairly conclusive evidence that the AI civs think alike in that they are out to gang up on the human player. Well, for one thing, we've all experienced the fact that the AI civs rarely fight amongst each other until late in the game, even when they are right on top of each other. Also in the game I just gave up on, I was playing as the Americans on warlord. I was on a huge supercontinent surrounded by the romans, egyptians, and french. I was doing pretty well, the initial land grab got me about a quarter of the continent. Suddenly the egyptians demanded a territory map and a negligible amount of gold. I refused, and I was suprised they declared war over that. That's not all, the egyptians managed to get military alliances with both the french, and the romans against me...both of which I was having no problems with. Suddenly I was attacked on 3 fronts. This is clear evidence that the AI was out to gang up on the human player. Do you all think I was being ganged up b/c I was the human player, or could there be another explanation?

They ganged up on you because you didn't play the diplomatic game. You should have made alliances first. Of course, seeing as how the AI sees the whole freaking map, it is entirely possible that they are programmed to ally against you. That's why you have to get in there first.

Never deny them maps. They'll just get them from someplace else, anyway. The gold, you gotta talk 'em down a bit, but pay it if you can afford it. 'Swhat I do, I still have money to throw at them.

What they did was ask for an alliance against you. You can do the same to them if you pay attention. The first turn that someone goes to war with you, you should be shopping for an alliance.

Japan got a right-of-passage through America and crossed the map with a bunch of units to attack me. I, being a clever human, contacted America and arranged for America to declare war on the Japs. They charged me a bundle, but the result was that Japan could no longer reach my cities. They had to attack America. I got free passage through America and wailed on those stinky Japs. It was funny. Japan would take cities from America and then I'd take those cities from Japan.

What you can do is never refuse them. Make a counter proposal that is still generous and gives them the map but not a rip off. They love you for it. If they demand a techjnology, 100 gold, and a territory map for their world map, propse a counter deal and just give them the territory map. They know whats on it anyway. Often if you give it to them as a gift theyll be gracious soon anyway and rarely attack. But the key is to definatly get mutual protection with other nations. Even if you both have mut prot with say Rome, if THEY attack YOU yours has more weight according to my observations.

**Diplomacy is crucial in this game.**

Even trading with countries help your relations. If you do it right, you can make it so that a country can't afford to attack you. In addition, unlike Civ2, you need a LARGE military during peace time. If you have the weakest military, the computer will go after you.

Look for oppurtunities. I watched Russia, then England, then Babylon declare war on Zululand. This was my chance. I declared war on Zululand. BINGO! No one cared. My large knight army came in and took most of the cities. (Except the city with Iron, Coal and Rubber - Took that one during WWI.)

TRADE TECHS. Until late in the game, the computer will keep pace with you. When WWI started and I have over $10000, is when I stopped trading techs.

Tech trades work both ways. I started on a small continent. Killed the Germans. All by my self. When I finally located the other civs, I was way behind. I trade resouces, and spent most of my money. However, in 6 to 8 turns, I was EVEN with the computer civs ;)
