A thread for posting out game modes that work, or may work (untested) in multiplayer. I'll start with one as someone who first played multiplayer always on custom maps (because the person I played with was so fussy about starting positions). I'd be particularly keen to hear any ways others have played that have worked.

Behind the Eight Ball (b8b)

Mixture of human and AI on a randomly generated map that allows competitive play between players of different abilities / experience.

i) Create a few custom maps of a suitable size for 8x Civs and populate 8x starting positions on each map. (By having multiple maps the host won't be at an advantage as they won't be able to remember each map).

ii) enable 2 or 3 city elimination or mass regicide (both of which the AI should be okayish with).

iii) Make player 1's starting position have the best land then each one gets worse, until player 8 who starts in hell (like a small island, tundra or a desert - but somewhere ideally where the AI will be able to make a second city)

iv) allocate player placement based on their ability / experience. The bigger the gap in player ability the bigger the gap in their starting positions should be. If players are fairly even in ability they should be starting positions that are numbered close together. Throw down the gauntlet to the best player in the lobby to pick Player 8 and put themselves behind the 8 ball. If they win then bragging rights are assured.

v) fill up unallocated spots with AI and set the difficulty level (in the editor) the level of the least experienced player.
