Gauntlet Two

Now I'm fairly new to this, but I don't see how you would have the time to win a conquest on a large map with 5 AI by 2000BC. Maybe if every tribal village gave you a technology advance and you had copper, iron and horses in your capitol, but even then it seems impoosible.

He's onto something, folks.

Let's see, a map with a small land mass, and one quecha taking out civs as fast as possible. That's my guess. :P

What type of map were you on? I have been playing around with the different types and can't find any that are small enough to move that fast around. I tried ring and it just too much walking. Going to try all of them in a minute.

My best finish is 890 BC. I should have been able to pull off about 1100 BC if I would have been a little more patient. That was on pangea and is still no where near your times.

Okay, I just got an 1130BC with the Quechas. Would've been a few hundred years earlier if Paris wasn't on a hill with 40% culture. That's gotta be the quickest way. I built one Quecha to look around and grab the villages. Then a worker to start chopping and then barracks. I used the worker to build a pig pasture and corn farm, but I might even skip that next try. Kept the first capital I conquered and that's it. All Quechas, all the time!!

Incan, Team Battleground, 4 corners - you basically know where the other civs are. I had eliminated 2 out of the 5 by 3500 BC. Unfortunately, my Queycha with +50% City Attack lost to a single Archer unit in the 3rd civs capital (~3300BC) so I quit that game. I see how it would be very, very easy to win before 2000 BC. Just get a hut or two with +EXP, take a few capitals and capture a few AI workers while you're at it to pop more huts. If you manage to find Bronze Working & Mining from huts, even better.

Not nearly as entertaining as the last gauntlet, for sure.

Is there a thread that lists what the initial starting maps look like? I can sorta figure out ring, wheel, but not all. Wondering if battleground is the best.

Team Battleground is defenately a good choice for this, there are a couple of other maps which are also pretty good. Out of those those 'weird' maps only Mirror is worth a try imo.

But might be for the better anyway, since almost always you'll start out right next to a computer & be able to steal his worker.

If you had Bronze Working that really would be something, the way it is i dont think an early worker pays off for two additional opponents.

I think I have figured out the trick to getting an early finish. I am shooting for 2000bc. I still have NO IDEA how you can get 2760 BC. You have to get lucky with every hut you popped to come up with that.

I finished the game 80AD, however I choose a random map Iceage, wide continents, so I had no clue where the others were, that kinda hindered me. Still it's more fun that way, if you already know where the comps are (battlegrounds), makes it kind lame imho.

I was getting 900 BC with a radnom pangea map and getting around 1400BC with battlegrounds. I believe Dianthus brought it up in another post but the HOF/gauntlet are about getting your name on the top of the boards. That means doing whatever you need to do to beat everyone else, even if it does reduce the enjoyability of the game.

I am sure they will eventually get their own scoring algorithm so that it will score games that are played well higher than games that are fairly easy.

It would also make sense to either differentiate top lists per map type or disallow certain maps (possibly for specific challenge's).

(has stopped playing this challenge as I'd rather waste my time on preparing for GOTM-2 than trying to get lucky ;))

I agree, those gibberish maps (sorry civ4 map designers) like Maze,Wheel, Hub etc. arent fun to play. Would be a nice move to exclude those kind of maps.

Yes there is of course much luck involved but not as much as you might think, i didnt get any (useful) techs or units from bonus villages for that matter.

It seems like 1400 or 1500 BC is the best consistently posted time (except for the 2700 bc time), which makes me feel better because I'm at least in the ballpark.

Did you manage to get a 2000 bc win since you think you've figured out the trick? I thought of something I want to try tonight that might make my games go faster.

You're crazy, Maze is absolutely my favorite map setting!

I have to agree now, 1500 BC is the only repeatable time on a regular basis. Getting 2000BC or before has to take a lot of luck. And Orca, I wasn't just referring to huts. Tech wise I only get mining and bronze working, rest are pointless I believe. If you got lucky with wheel and animal husbandry you could pump out some chariots to move accross the map faster.

I think the biggest luck is getting a comp right next to you and finding ASAP in the beginning. On team battlegrounds you have a 50/50 chance of sending your first warrior in the right direction to get to the closest opponent. Luck is all about getting experience/promotions fast as well.
