OK, I've found the culprit: it was a little piece of software called SOUNDMAX. This is a mixer for my motherboard integrated sound card. This software replaces the original Vista mixer and strangely had trouble recognizing my sound hardware (most notably headphones). I removed the SoundMax software and I've been able to install BTS and FEAR without any trouble.
To everyone who might have trouble with CRC errors or "Transfer feature errors", I would recommend the following:
1- check if your DVD is damaged by running the install on a friend's computer (preferably a WinXP). If it's damaged, try to get a replacement.
2- check if you have the same kind of troubles with another game install. Those CRC errors occur more frequently with big files. In Civ4, I've had trouble with "Civilization4.exe", "Art0.FPK", "Intro.Bik" and other ".bik" files (movie files).
3- CRC errors and transfer features might happen because of a failed hardware. Check your DVD drive (replace it with the one in your friend's computer). Check the DVD drive cable (replace it with the one in your friend's computer).
4- If none of the above worked then you might have another failing hardware/driver interfering with the install. In my case it was the SoundMax software but it might be an antivirus, an anti-spyware, a direct2dvd driver, a virtual driver (Alcohol, Daemon tools), etc. Remove everything that's unneccesary at this stage and try re-installing.
5- and finally, if really none of the above worked and you still want to play, you might want to try copying the DVD on your C drive and install from there. This might or might not work. In my case it didn't, so I've copied the DVD on a USB key (
using another computer !) and then back to my C drive and I've been able to install the game from the C drive.
