Getting denounced without reason

I have been playing on level 5 (first with AI assist). In my last two games, early in the game, I was denounced by nearby AIs without reason - no claims of settling too close, breaking promises, or anything else. One (Japan) had even announced a public friendship with me - then bang. I usually play as China (LOVE them double tap crossbows).

Is it a matter of getting too powerful too quickly or what? Thanks.

In diplomacy you can scroll over the Civ and see what they are upset about but most AI's are just erratic.

All it said was I was denounced. I was wondering if I was getting too strong too fast, and maybe I should either be playing up a higher level, or if I was just expanding too fast.

you are probably expanding too fast or expanding into their territory. Japan will occasionally roll a high aggressive number, then he will act just like Attila and denounce you for existing.

Long list;

land envy; city state envy; expanding too fast; city state envy; wonder envy; my friend just denounced you; war mongler penalty are all reasons the AI will denounce you.

denouncing basically means 'hey guys, let's pick on this guy'. he wants other civs support against you, and if you see no reason for denouncing, there's a good chance he will declare war on you soon.
of course, you could also do this. denounce one turn before declaring war, and other civs could actually get friendly or even join the war on your side.
