Getting over the Hump

So when I play civ I have this problem where I play a game up to around the year 500ad maybe and then quit and start a new game. I think this is usually do not have a middle game strategy and am unfamiliar with middle game tech paths. I have a couple friends that also play only the ancient era before they start new games. I do manage to complete games once and a while but I always feel very overwhelmed by the amount of cities I have and everything that needs to be managed. Most of the games I play are usually conquest so the ones that I do complete usually just end in my giant army demolishing everything in site for the final few centuries of the game(with cannons and grenadiers).

Does anyone have ideas of how I can get over this hump and start enjoying the more modern half of the game?

Smaller map sizes will make for less stuff to micromanage.
Higher difficulty levels should make the end game challenging (at least, sometimes).

You can try playing a smaller map. On a smaller map, there aren't as many cities/ units to manage. Or you could try to move up a difficulty level. You also said that your usual victory is conquest. Try going for a peaceful victory like space race or culture to mix it up.

Going for a peaceful victory still doesn't help. you don't get to have the fun of a modern era war. Try advanced start and put everyone in the modern times. Thats not as fun as playing a game through modern era though.:( Only time that I've gone that far without winning was my first five or so games when I was playing on warlord level and was two eras past everyone else. :ar15: :egypt:

wow that was quick. yeah the smaller map sizes seems like a good idea. The games I have finished have been on small maps. Maybe then I can develop mid game plans and tech paths which as of now I have none. It seems once I get passed civil service or code of laws I usually just start choosing which ever tech seems to best fit the moment instead of having an actual plan.

I just beeline cemistry + steel and kill off 1 or 2 civs with grenaiders and cannons. Then go for facism + communism.
