Recently a solution appeared on Apolyton, which also worked for me -- I got rid of the "black terrain" and "shiny leaderheads" problems, and now only have "floodplains visible in the fog of war" problem! 
Still, that is a huge improvement.
My vcard is GForce 440 Go, 32MB. Now it runs the game quite well, with now major slowdowns. The solution was to install the drivers from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ Note, that in my case the latest drivers did not work at all and I had to experiment a lot to find a proper version. v60.60 worked for my card... Also note, that their drivers are hacked, that is you have to overwrite the original *.inf files with those given there before installing. Make sure you always can rollback in case after installing a new driver your system becomes unstable.
