Giant Bomb - Interview

GDC - Press currently having first look at proper game play, displaying things like diplomacy.

Guy with Microphone states the 'Added two new directions/DURR HEXAGONS HAVE MORE DIRECTIONS TO MOVE IN THAN SQUARES DURR' thing and Firaxis Guy goes 'yep'.

- 'Hexagons more organic', 'gameplay oddities fixed by hexagon'
- Switch to Hexes one of the first changes made in planning Civ5. Blahblah Panzer General

Guy with Mic: "I've never played Civilization...except Civ Rev"

- "Provide a balance between styles of gameplay, war, culture, etc"

Mic Guy: "Any new leaders?"
Firaxis Guy: "Yes, mix of old and new, John Schafer is a history major, believe he's picked out ones that suitably represent the cultures"

Overall, nothing.

Unfortunately, there really was nothing new. Thanks for finding it though, V. Soma. :)

The only things I learned was that Jon Shafer was a history major and that hexes were the first game play change they implemented for ciV.

The interviewer had never played a full game of Civ but had played Civ Rev.

Really just generic information that we already knew. :(

I think the Firaxis guy also used the word organic about 15 times.

No new information, really. Just a hype interview to get people excited.

I sure hope the developers get some time off their busy marketing and preview schedule to actually work on the game!!

If nothing else, this interview at the end did mention different game speeds like in Civ 4 (though this was probably an expected feature anyway)

If all the press are going to regurgitate the 'Hexagons have more sides' thing, and all the Firaxis people are going to say 'Organic! Organic!', I'm not sure if anything meaningful will show up :P

But hopefully.

Yeah, I really hope we get something fresh soon - all the stuff coming out at the moment is getting pretty repetitive.

Hexes, one unit per tile, fully animated leaders. Woo. We know.

There must be about ten thousand questions you could ask about the upcoming CiV, but the interviewer...
...never played Civilization, only Civ Rev...sorry!
Yeah, you should be sorry, you &#*% :gripe:

Joking aside, I get the feeling these interviews are exactingly controlled by Firaxis; -You should ask about the hexagons, CivRev interface, Jon Shafer, PG etc etc. -You must not ask about specific leaders, Civs and such as we intend to release that kind of information in small doses during spring and summer...

 i just regretted wasting my 5minutes to watch that video.

yes

i agree

 yes, the boy is praising hexes. a guy who never played civ saga might think that civ was a very bad game w/o hexes, if he sees this video.
i understand the beauty of hexes and some changes it would bring but it is always mentioned in the beginning before all changes as if it is the most important change. that is bad.

No. They are just following the same pattern again and again. It's marketing strategy and not the fault of the young employee.
sure it is not his fault :) he is instructed to talk like that.

we are just disappointed when we hear only about hexes. actually, i gave up searching for civ5 previews in gamer sites.
the important ones are shown on cfc mainsite by moderators anyway.

Ryan Davis is not a strategy game player, as he himself admits. No new information here...

Edit: although at the end, Peter Murray (or whatever his name is) does say, "A variety of map sizes and game speeds will be available. If you want to play a game that feels like its stretching over the course of history, you have that option."

Is this the first actual confirmation of multiple game speeds and map sizes?

Hexes have more directions than squares?

In Civ my units appear to be able to walk 8 directions.
