Gold Edition and BtS Problem

Anyone else have a similar problem trying to install BtS with Civ 4 Gold?

Despite the fact that Civ 4 Gold has all the most recent patches, when BtS tries to install, it indicates that Civ 4 is not up to date and attempts to patch and then the installation aborts.

Civ 4 Gold works just fine by its self... but it's a bit frustrating not being able to add BtS on top of it.

Any ideas?

I do have a problem loading the Warlords patch ... It does not recognize that Warlords is loaded when I try to install the patch.

Unfortunately, Civ 4 Gold already has Civ and Warlords patched with the most recent updates. BtS thinks it needs to patch Civ with 1.74, even though that's already been patched.

What I need to do is find a way to have BtS skip it's attempts to update Civ and Warlords...

Have you tried patching manually anyway? It is possible that that does solve the problem by writing the correct information into the files. Other then that I know they are slow in responding but have you tried Firaxis' customer support?

In order to help you most effectively with any PC related questions we need you to attach your DxDiag and MSinfo when contacting us via email.

Here are instructions on how to do this.

To create the DxDiag.txt and MSinfo.txt, please do the following:
1.) Run DXDIAG.EXE from your Start menu (click Start, Run..., then type "dxdiag" and hit Enter)
2.) Click the "Save all Information" button, located at the bottom of the program window
3.) Save the file as "dxdiag.txt"
4.) Click the "More Help" tab
5.) Click the button marked "MSinfo..."
6.) Click on the "File" menu and choose "Export" (Do not use "save")
7.) Then save the file as a Text Document and name it "MSinfo.txt"
8.) If possible, please put these files in a .zip format and attach them to your email. (When inside of your email program there is usually a "Paperclip" button or icon which is the attachment option.)
Be sure to include a detailed description of the problem you are having and the text of any detailed error messages that appear.

It will also help us if you can send a screenshot of the error message along with the both text files.

I have tried the patch manually... it's odd, when I run the patch it says that no version of Civ 4 has been found... this must be because I'm running Gold... it's odd that it wouldn't recognize the Gold version... makes me wonder what I will have to do when the next patch comes out.

I did try customer service, e-mail and phone... not much help there.

It's a bit frustrating... buying both of the games Gold and BtS new, expecting that something as simple as installation would go smoothly... stinks.

:agree:
I am curious how is the game (gold edition) installed? Does the file system look like:
...\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4
and
...\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Warlords
? or is it totally different from this?
Unfortunately the game installation routine does not seem to allow disabling patching - which is an extremely bad move for take2 and Firaxis - when they sell a Gold edition they should make sure it is usable for expansions as well...

Of sorts... it's under:

C:\\Documents and Settings\17818\Application Data\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Gold

warlords is a seperate directory within the above path...

odd that it was installed in documents and settings... I suppose because "17818" is my computer ID...

Read your pm please.
Also that might be the reason it cannot find the patch - since it looks in the wrong directory. It might be possible to tweak the Windows registry a bit there, but I would hold on that and try what I proposed in the pm ;)

I'll just quote another problem with the Gold Edition that caused problems with the HOF-Mod - maybe that is part of the problem why BtS won't accept it:
There are some differences in the Gold Edition that cause the Assets warning. So far it looks like only the EXE and coregame DLL.

I've had a similar problem with my gold addition. When I download the game of the month save I get the following error message:

"the save file you have selected is protected to ensure that the assets in your mod folder have not been changed"

I have already reinstalled and tried again. No luck. Same message.

That is an issue with the HOF-Mod - please post your problem in their thread, they'll help you out.
Edit: I have just seen you already did :)
Edit2: and I have also read Denniz' reply - I fear Firaxis will have to come up with a solution there :(
Probably Gold Edition again. I haven't heard definately, but I know that there are slight differences from the standalone version.

That message is a Civ4 built-in security feature for multiplayer that ensures all players have the same version when Locked Modified Assets option is checked. It is not the HOF Mod this time. Firaxis blew it with Gold Edition.

Is this happening with everybody who is trying install BtS on top of Civ IV Gold or just only certain people?

I was planning to give Civ IV Gold as a gift to my father and then get him BtS later on but it would suck if he wouldn't be able to get BtS to run.

I havn't seen too many people complaining about this issue, OTOH I have no idea how many people buy Gold and BtS ;)
But since both the .dll and the .exe are different (probably just compiled on different dates, but still) it is well possible that the BtS installer cannot recognize Gold as a valid install, if that is the case Firaxis/Take2 would have to make a workaround available on their support site...

I think it's certain people....my BtS works fine with Gold. Can't manual patch Gold (regular Civ), though...

The 1.74 patch. I haven't checked my Gold recently, though.

The patch program keeps spitting out a "Can't Find Civ IV" error, but I'm not as worried about it. (I prefer BtS, anyways.)
