I'd like to see a return to using gold an food contribution from towns helping build wonders like in civ2, any town could contribute to another city building a wonder in either gold or food. and thus making them build the wonder more
quickly.

same for me ... I hope we can customize the game in this way even if the basic game has not this option ...

Well, I don't know if this helps, but it has been indicated that food can be traded-both within and between civs. Not sure exactly how it will work, but we know that access to multiple types of food-via trade-will boost health which, in turn, will boost your population growth.

We also know that resources of equal type will not be in the same area. I assume this means, for example, that food will be spread across different parts of the world, without the same type available in a single area.

Very interesting.

Thats true, but we don't know for certain what that means-though I am assuming that-in the case of food-if one part of the world has rice, then it is less likely this same area will get apples or wheat (and vice versa). It could also mean, though, that you won't find a bonus resource in the same area as you might find a strategic resource-but I am placing my bets on the former. So you won't get silks in the same area as dyes, or iron in the same location as oil.

That only makes sense (the former)... and should be very interesting strategically. Do we know how many food types there are

If you want gold and food play rise of nations, I hope civ 4 doesn't include that concept. It would be too confusing.

We know that food types can be traded between cities and civilizations, but we don't know whether food units can be traded.

I suspect that, just as in Civ3, there will be no way to transfer food or production units between cities.

I'd have to search for the quote but I'm nearly positive they said "units" as you discribe them, can not be traded at all.

I'd be surprised if food trades were finite, as that would be an inconsistency with strategic resources and luxuries. Of course, I think the solution is to make resources and luxuries finite, but I don't think they're going to do that.
