hi,

this thread is for experienced civ3 players to post strategies that financially hinder other civs and allow you to become a major superpower and / or technological genious.

Hmm.

Research and sell techs that you know the AI is not researching. Broker for other techs as possible. Get the GPT form the AI. AI is now crippled for research.

Once you are researching faster than the AI, you can research what you want and sell it on to keep them crippled, although it is often best to still go for ones you know they are not researching.

Very simple soundbites, and they work if you can get it going. The biggest trick is to research the right tech. On higher levels go for writing / literature / polytheism in the ancient era at minimum research, you should still beat the AI if you go for these asap.

I agree with anarres: selling technologies to other civilizations for as much gold per turn as possible is the best way to cripple them financially. My other favorite strategy is if another civilization is dishing out some strong competition, I usually go to war with them and try to score a few blows. Usually you won't have a strong enough military to conquer them outright, but if you can smash through their defenses and raze/capture cities, you can usually convince them to sign a peace treaty with a hefty gold per turn war reparations stipulation tacked neatly at the bottom. That compounded on top of the damage to their empire can weaken them significantly with little military loss for yourself.

That's just my two gold coins, I'd like to see what everyone else has to say.

but that doesn't work there has been times where i have researched the MOST MOST expensive techs and offered them to a cpu nation for gpt and the cpu refuses.

am i doing something wrong?

please explain in more detail

looking forward to your responses,

The ai may refuse deals because:

- they don't have enough income
- your reputation is gone. You broke deals and they trust you anymore.

Deal breaking can be:
- Starting a war while having a gpt deal or lusury/resource deal going
- cancel a military alliance
- starting a war while having 'right of passage'
- bad luck: a culture flip makes you lose the iron source that you were selling. The AI has it's only harbor destroyed, thus making it impossible to trade. Barbarians or AI block the trading route.

Usually the AI will start to pay gpt in the middle ages. Mostly the best paying civs are commercial (France, Carthage, India, ....). Other civs, with a lot of power, may also trade big amounts.

As time progresses you will mostly see prices go up. 20 gpt is nice for Chivalry, but you may want 100+ gpt for Atomic Theory.

The level also is important. On warlord you can't get as much as on Monarch. Reason: the AI couldn't expand and build fast enough: less income.

With a shot reputation the AI will still give YOU gpt.

My advise is to get roads. EVERYWHERE and be a repblic or democracy. With raods before corruption in these gov'ts, you will get 2 extra commerce per citizen. It adds up fast with banks, libraries, etc.

I see.

I don't think I've ever had a very bad rep so I wouldn't know.

i am currently in the industrical age and we are the most powerful nation on the map. ==== America

i control 18 cities, and gain new ones every few turns, due to my wealth, technology and culture. cpu cities riot against the cpu just to be a part of my empire.

However, i am currently a despotism government. I am SO close to getting communism so i won't have to worry about corruption all that much.

what do you guys think? Should i go communist?

my treasury is like well over 1000 Gold with the world's best military superpowers.

my nation is the world bank. I finance and loan money to only the top nations == that way i control them through the monetary system.

hehe. You're on your own if you switch to communism.

Very few of the top players use it, it is a bad choice in nearly all cases. If you are nearly at communism you should have already switched to democracy, maybe via republic.

If you find that you can win easily games this way I suggest playing a higher level.

well, what map size? if it's medium or larger, and you have the FP, then communism might actually suit your needs--just don't let yourself get too large!

I always do, and it does hurt my trading abilities. I always randomly declare war on nearby civs. early on just for something to do. I know that sounds stupid, but it does work, I've managed to cripple several civilizations with just a couple warriors. But after that I couldn't carry out a successful gpt or diplomatic agreement with any other nation... ever! Not that I needed it, I had 4000 gold... and made nearly a 1000 per turn, but still, it bugged me.

Early attacks aren't generally that bad. As long as you don't break any deals, it won't hurt you too much in the long run.

Very early attacks, when you just made contact with one civ, stay unknown to the world if you are able to kill them before other contact is made.

Hygro is correct with the fact that the AI will still not hesitate to give you gpt/luxury/resource deals. It will also not hesitate to accept the same from you, as long as you don't ask for map/gold/tech, since the latter is the only way the AI can be screwed.

okay i will go republic and skip the government techs all together in modern era. since it is communism and something else.

i will make sure i keep my current 18 cities and no more after that.

japan is currently the #2 nation. I am thinking about offering them a BIG loan so i can take control of their economy and finances.

tell me what you think guys

monarchy and republic are ancient ages. Democracy middle ages, communism industrial.

big loans sound fun. I'm not actually used to loaning, so i don't know it's effectiveness, but hey, go for it!
