hello all,
i'm playing civ3 vanilla and i've read a couple of threads where people say yhey get gpt from the AI when sellin/trading techs. i can never get them to accept gpt trades. why? my advisor automatically says "they should be insulted by this deal" or something like this. i even tried 1 gpt per turn for a tech and always the sam answer.

another question is how long do the gpt deals last? can we define this or is it fixed?

All gpt deals last for 20 turns, unless you/AI break them.

As for the "insulted by this deal" thing: you have either hurt your rep and the AI won't accept gpt deals or they are not able to make gpt deals (i.e. close to bankruptcy).

:)

All per-turn deals last 20 turns.

Deals depend upon attitude and reputation. Reputation is ruined if you break a deal. Deals can be broken in unexpected ways. Say you enter a military alliance against another civ. If you make peace before twenty turns, then you will have broken the alliance. Once reputation is killed, you can never get get it back.

Probably you have not ruined your reputation if you are getting the "probably insulted" message. When I have ruined my reputation, I usually get "They would never consider such a deal" message. You can tell for sure by asking them for ten gold and offering ten gold per turn. You do not have to consummate the deal, just see what the advisor says. If the civ will not accept it, then your reputation is shot and you will not be able to do gpt deals. The exception is with a different civ that has no contact with the upset civ. It is possible the civ does not know about your deal breaking. If it is early in the game, you can break a deal and wipe out a civ before it meets other civs, then your reputation can be saved.

Attitude is how much the other civ likes you. The friendlier they are, the more likely they are to trade gpt and the better deal you can get. Be careful of asking too much. Sometimes civs go to war to get out of gpt deals.

ok then! i suspect two reasons: either they are bankrupt (have to check this) or their attitude is not yet friendly because i haven't broken any deals.... yet (its still early in the game)!

thanks

If it's still early in the game they probably are short of cash. Nice gpt deals come in the middle ages or so.

gpt deals depend on the level you are playing too. Up to monarch the AI are backwards in developing their territory and building money making improvements (marketplaces, banks, etc).

At the end of the middle ages things should improve on their part too.

:)

Just to add.... IIRC another ocassion is when you try to offer gpt more than you have. Try to offer 10gpt when you have only 9gpt net income, the AIs "will be insulted by this deal"

No, in that case they should "never accept such a deal".

How far have you played into the game? An AI in despotism almost never has any gpt. Wait 'til they get Monarchy or, better, Republic. Then they'll be willing to deal.
