If you are playing an epic game, you might notice that golden ages are much much weaker.
Epic game about triples the amount of hammers, gold, culture, research, etc needed to advance something, but also reduces the amount of years each turn represent.
This basically means that your units get to move several times "per turn" compared to standard or quick games.
But golden ages on the other hand, no suck. A 5 turn golden age is awesome for a quick game, but meaningless in an epic game.
I still find the game a lot easier on epic. Since I get to utilize my army much more extensively, I can conquer much faster. I could have conquered the whole world before 500AD if I didn't care about happiness... as it is, I just conquered most of the world... without much benefit from golden ages.
