This was an unforgettable game. I have played many exciting OCCs, but this was above the rest. The action started early and other than a period of calm when Vikings became allies (+680 to +1600), it was nonstop. I do not think I have ever had this many casualties in an OCC game.

In the end what saved me was:
1. Romans staying as allies to the very end allowing me to ignore my western border.

2. Viking lack of fast tech progress. They got Robotics on the turn of my launch, Flight 7 turns later, and no advanced flight till the end. They did get Mobile warfare in 1851 before I had even started on Apollo and took advantage of it greatly.

3. Other powers ignoring me or not engaging in meaningful warfare with me due to geography and my valuable Roman ally.

The AI showed occasional signs of smartness not often seen. One of the biggest AI weaknesses is sending troops in small numbers to battles they have little chance of winning. In this game the Vikings did a lot of that but, on more than one occasion, the Vikings refrained from attacking for a few turns and then attacked with large numbers. Twice they managed to kill enough troops to occupy forts lining my eastern border. First time they occupied just one (out of 5) fort, the second time they managed to occupy two forts. Both times they were pushed back the next turn. I was lucky my capital was not run over. I had lots of defensive troops but they were all in the forts. The city usually had a diplomat and an idle/charging none settler in it.

The last of these scary attacks, was a double attack near my launch. In 1889 Vikings, who usually attacked from the east, attacked from the north with 3 tanks. They killed a Legion (last of my ancient troops, kept in the fort on the hilly wine which saw infrequent action in late game) and severely wounded a Marine. As luck would have it, I lost my stealth fighter during the counter attack but managed to kill all the invasion force with the aid of my tanks. This being the turn before launch and thinking the AI is not smart enough to attack massively again, I opted to build the last component. I was wrong! Another massive Viking tank attack followed. This time the Vikings killed 2 Marines and occupied 2 of my forts. That my 3 tanks managed to kill 2 Viking tanks and free the forts was lucky.
 
Congratulations, Ali! From your previous log I would have thought the Vkinings would have grown too powerful.
I have picked up my first-hut-save and started re-playing it as OCC, but not much action so far (-725). Maybe because my hut-luck was pretty much the same as in my original game, no barbs, no bad techs, some advanced tribes to be denied... And the AI were great research assistance again, I have 14 techs by now and only 3 are white.

It took some more time to get prepared for a big spaceship, during which I tried to kept my PD going and my population growing whereever I could.
 
Congratulations, Ali! From your previous log I would have thought the Vkinings would have grown too powerful.
I have picked up my first-hut-save and started re-playing it as OCC, but not much action so far (-725). Maybe because my hut-luck was pretty much the same as in my original game, no barbs, no bad techs, some advanced tribes to be denied... And the AI were great research assistance again, I have 14 techs by now and only 3 are white.
Thanks. Vikings became my major fear early on. When they annihilated the Chinese, they became super scary.

My bad hut luck definitely contributed significantly to my early troubles. I started on Colossus when I had a single warrior for defense thinking I will get some units from huts and I got none! That I managed to survive till Colossus got done was very lucky. Of course I had to use my settler for defense more than once and eventually lost it to a Roman attack. For a few turns after that I was at war on two fronts with a single warrior!

With 2 horsemen and a legion from huts you may avoid early trouble completely. However, this setup is all but guaranteed to produce late game challenges. It is not easy defending a single city when you are surrounded and your main preoccupation is building space ship parts.
