I thought about the beginning for a while before starting. I decided to work the Silk for the science and go for the size 1 settler. After that, I had the settler put a road on the silk. This was for the science benefit, as well as giving time to have a warrior created to pop the first hut.

I also chose to do the 'off-path' tech (toward Monarchy) as the first. Getting Bronze Working on turn 6 alowed me to rush the Settler an extra turn.

I did notice at some point that there were 2 Barb cities in the top 5 cities. These existed in the Beginning save file. I find it interesting that while the Russians should be the first civilization to move, the Barbs and at least 3 other civilizations have cities before the Russians have taken their first turn.

At this point there are a lot of Barbs between Odessa and Chinese. I think the first 100 unit uprising has taken place. After getting the Chinese maps in the next turn, I know where the 2 Barb cities are.
There are a few black spaces between Odessa and Nanking. It looks like the 'big pile' is in the black space. Over the next number of turns, there are a lot of attacks on Nanking and a lot of barbs heading toward Odessa.
I move the VET phalanx out of Odessa (on Grass) and into a river-swamp space for the defensive bonuses. The Phalanx will survive a number of attacks.
I also have an archer in the Area and he kills a few barbs while becoming VET and coming very close to death.
I think I am going to need the Great Wall, that is why I traded techs with the Chinese (they had offered Masonry on a previous meeting).

So thanks to Peaster, Ali and haleewud for taking up the challenge of Barbarian Wrath. Nobody had too much trouble it seems. All expanded number of cities much faster than my own game.
