It's about time somebody opens the spoiler-thread.
I went for the river first and it was way more tempting to found two cities there than to wait for the s1-settler. After that, it was expand & explore.

I decided to play OCC becuase the setup is great for OCC, it has been a while since I played one, and a quick game is needed when getting started nearly 6 weeks after the game is posted.

There were supposed to be 5 civs in this game. But I had no blue rival, and from the log it seems that neither did Major. Major could you please confirm? Anyone else seeing a blue rival?
 
I played to 500BC several weeks ago and have since been away from the game. I think "played" is the right word - too much just trying things and not enough proper planning.

I played the game in early April. I guess I have just been to busy to comment.

I also decided to play OCC. In the long run, I didn't think the game went very well. It seemed like it took a long time.

There has been insufficient growth, but the Chapel and ships mean we can go ahead. Have I time for a spaceship, or is conquest a more realistic way to continue now, after a long break from the game and with the deadline approaching?

I have seen this tactic every once in a while but never done it myself: producing size 1 settler(s) and joining them to your one city.

It seems to me that unless there are special circumstances limiting the choice of where to have your first citizen put to work or being in a position with nothing useful to build this tactic creates negative instead of positive value.

One way to evaluate the situation is that in a typical case where you have access to both shielded grassland and forest, the tradeoff between the two is one food for one shield. Going with this equivalence the settler is worth 40 foods and when you use it to go from size 2 (right after producing the size 1 setter) to size 3 you only gain 30 foods.

Another way to look at it is that for the cost of 40 shields, with this tactic you get to size 2 later and size 3 (and subsequent sizes as long as you are not growing via celebration) faster. You lose some production for being size 1 vs. size 2 but once you get to 3 the extra production helps you catch up but it will take a while and meanwhile you lose on the opportunity cost of things you could have made with those 40 shields.

20 cities to my 12 at this point: I guess mine are bigger. I was choosing between continuing to develop peacefully with a Republic establishing an SSC at New York, and switching to conquest with my monarchy's crusaders going in all directions so as take less real time to complete. I like the variation of delaying a while longer and using SoL to be fundamentalist, but I had not thought of that and I won't use it (in this game) because I read it here before thinking of it myself.

I may run short of real time, but I think it will be the peaceful path. Let's play a few more turns...

Unlike the peaceful beginning and middle of the game, the end was very eventful. Up until then my only real battle was with barbarians. Indians got very belligerent near the end and started attacking me big time. First they were trying to sneak in and steal a tech. I blocked them every which I could and succeeded for a number of turns. Eventually they managed to sneak in and steal. I decided to keep the peace as I was building my space ship...

I like the variation of delaying a while longer and using SoL to be fundamentalist, but I had not thought of that and I won't use it (in this game) because I read it here before thinking of it myself.

I had used that technique before (I think it was #139, being Carth on the mediterranean map), and I liked it. The icing on the cake is to revolt once you discover demo (regardless of oedo), then build SoL the same turn by using zoom-home.

Btw, I think my hut-luck was pretty, pretty good on this one and the AI were not causing any trouble, which definitely helped.

First they managed to steal a tech despite my efforts blocking them. I decided to keep the peace as I was building my space ship. Their diplomats kept coming though and eventually they got in and started sabotaging. This time I declared war, halted space ship production, and attended to defense. Up to this point my only defensive units were a marine and a battleship. I made the battleship in case barbarians or the English showed up near my city. (I was nominally at war with the English but in actuality never fought till the very end.) While I used the battleship to kill units in the closest Indian coastal city, the battle was a land battle and the battleship was not very useful. I immediately made more marines and stealth fighters but before they could stabilize the situation I lost several city improvements including my nuclear power plant. I put my marines up front and pulled back my vans which were acting as shields against their diplomats before. My superior technology eventually prevailed but I had quite a few casualties and went back to the space ship with insufficient vans and a drained treasury.
