Gotm #22 - Spolier

Well let's see. This will be my first GOTM. In fact this my first post on this forum. Hey, I only found this site like a week ago and I've been busy playing the GOTM.

Right now I'm in the year 1944 and I'm only a few turns away from winning, I've been waging a war of inciting revolts. there's only two zulu cities left. One of which I just found and I have a cruiser and a transport in close proximity to and soon I will have a spy as well.

I'll be able to take over there capital soon as I already have 2 artillery on the same continent as thier capital and I have 8 more which will arrive next turn.

While this might sound surprising, this is the most aggressively I've ever played Civ2, and I've had it for close to 6 years. Oh my I remember playing it on a 386 with 4 MB Ram and 100 MB HD. Needless to say, I had to shut off the throne room, civilopedia, wonder movies, diplomacy screen, heralds, and the high council so the game would even play. and of course i only played in 16 colors. but really the only thing that got me upset was that i couldn't even see the grassland shields. lol

well like i said this the most aggressively i've ever played civ2. i think i'm doing pretty good at conquering considering i didn't even start until 1850, when it occurred to me that if i wanted to end the game before 2020 i'd better start conquering. by this time, i was already approaching an impasse in my growth anyhow, i had completely colonized the initial land mass, fortified an elephant to keep the americans and the celts away, most of my cities were approaching 12 and i hadn't discovered sanitation yet.

so i started producing a military and moved my settlers down by new york. first i attacked them to break the peace, and then fortified in a fortress, then i waited for them to attack me with a catapult and then i built a fortress outside of new york and took it over. and then, well the rest is history, but next month i promise i'll keep a better log )

Played till 1AD.Kinda slow in some ways,not so bad in others.

12 cities.Won't build anymore.I may get some more from huts but gonna concentrate on trade now.Berlin(whale,fish,buffalo) is size 12 with 60 trade arrows.

Now in Republic, finished first round of "we love days"
Rushing caravans for Cope's.

Peaceful relations with all civs and manipulating their science just a little.Had to break an alliance with the Zulus.Although no other even has contact,they insist I break relations with the evil empire blah blah.They would not behave cooperatively as long as I was allied with the Zulus even though they don't know the Zulus exist

Despite a pretty late first government change,science is progressing good.Marco's is a wonderful wonder when used correctly.27 techs so far.Working Medicine and Shake's will follow Cope's..I think.I do have Gravity and could do Sir Ike's first.We'll see how some camels pay when delivered to decide for sure.

Yes, the GOTM score is based on the number of turns that are played, not the game year.

Well, it looks like I won't be able to finish this one.

I started pretty bad with all my huts giving barbs and one a tech.

I just got a settler near the desert-bottleneck when I met an American horseman there. They offered peace and I was foolish enough to believe that they meant NOT to attack me. They sneak attacked 2 turns later, taking out my horseman and a warrior, and forcing me to RB some units in my nearby city. It would have been for nothing if the AI had moved it's units a little better, but I guess I was lucky there.

I was already worried that this could turn into a very ugly game for me when the Mongols were destroyed by the Celts in the early game, and my fears were more than justified when I met them and saw they were 7(!) techs ahead of me, the supreme power of the world and already a Republic in 1000 BC.
What was even worse, they had attacked and captured the American advanced tribe of New York southeast of the bottleneck and were now rapidly advancing to Washington with 2 archers, and a horseman.
I could fortunately do some extensive trading with Lincoln after I had made peace with him again, they were eradicated by the Celts before 1 AD.

So here I was on a continent dominated by the Celts, who were already starting to show signs of aggression and at parity as far as techs were concerned. I decided to block the Celts with a size 1 walled city near Washington and then proceed to subvert New York (containing the Pyramids) to make a stand there.
That plan succeeded but my and my power is now Supreme. I've tried to settle the southern continent but my cities were quickly destroyed by 3 rampaging Carthaginian elephants. I have also spotted a Zulu horseman and seen a Aztec trireme so it seems I'll have to leave the river-networks to them.

It's near 1000 AD now and I have only 3 wonders (HG, Mike's and Pyramids) and I am building the Colossus (for some reason the Celts haven't built that one yet) and I'm in control of the game, but it will take time to complete this game and that is something I don't seem to have enough of these days )

It seems that a lot of you waited a while before getting those suckers of your island. I took them out fairly towards the start.
The way i lookat it is that the sooner i get these people of MY island the sooner i can change to democracy without having any hassle with war.
Although im probably losing out a lot in the caravan trading area!
Oh well.
I never did like caravans too much-they take to long to deliver until late in the game!

God damn... I actually lost. ... OK I didn't loose par se, but in two turns I might as well have.

The aztezs are just about to land on Alpha Centuri and I was too stupid (confindant) that I thought I could go and destroy their capital. I went after the Zulu capital first (They also lauched a ship), but their government kept escaping and I spent too much time which i shoul have esent diverting my fleet to the Aztecs.

And not only that they have been firing Nukes at me since 1940. (I had to rush build manhatan to avoid them getting it... and the points). So after ten years or so of them nuking and taking my coastal cities I finally got my SDI network up and running. and they lauched their ships. (I had a ship, 10,000 colonisits and maximum thrust... 4.5 yrs ) I thought I I might as well go for their capital and that'll give me twenty ears or so afterwards to mop up polution and sort out my economy.

How wrong I was.

The Zulu government kept escaping, and their idea of a road network was... well nothign was there and I had to fight a mobile war throughy jungles and mountains. In fustation I sent five of so units south on my landmass and destroyed the Mongols.

The Zulus refused to die, I had full taxes and no science for about 50 year while I bribed their units and cities... but still they kept on coming. I took a city and used its cruises to knock out what Ithought was a counterattack only to loose the city the turn later with a fleet of bombvers and paratroopers followed up by a rigade of tanks and howisers.

I spent most of my money on buying SDI defences for the cities I had just cptured only to find one had slipped thrugh the net and they nuked it. (oh the pain.)

I'm sire I was only a couple of turns from complete global warming. (and starvation, because weven though I had fifty engineers on the mainland it'll still take them 80 years or so to fix up the mess as I am sure more will come.) And the worst thing about it... I had not fired a single nuke and had 40 or so solar plants working overtime and pratically zero polution.

Its not like I planned this war.. I was caught offgaurd when the Aztecs lande with a full troop and ransacked my west coast. I got them back only to find the Mongols had started up again. (one fortified tank on a mountain fortress took care of that problem though ).

Then suddenly when I was rebuilding on of my coastal cities the Zulus turned up with a nuke and blew it all up. Everyone was annoyed at me for some reason (I had a spotless rep.). It was a under a century to go and I had just got a total war on my hands.

On the upside I controlled half the world (as festering as it is) and are about ten turns off conplete domination... just a shame about the global warming and two ships almost at AC.

I finally finished by landing a spaceship in 1906. Somehow I expected it to be sooner. In mid 1860s I switched government to fundamentalism to keep up with the military threats. I used this opportunity and finished off Mongols and got rid of those Zulu pests. Then I captured or ruined all new Aztec and Carthaginian cities that I was not trading with and otherwise beat both nations up.

Carthaginians got close to finishing Manhattan three times and each time I had to beat the city building it till it was defenseless. At that point they would abandon it. I built it myself two turns before landing. I switched back to Democracy about a decade before landing and exhausted a 30K treasury left by the church.

Well, I did not finish in time, even with the extention. But I go on anyway. Picking up at 1AD. Having formed a Republic in 860AD, the population increased from 2Million to 3.6Million in 5 turns.
