(of course this is said in Indy Neidell's voice).
OK, so I am a bad player. I cannot handle Emperor on vanilla, at all. I am a peacemonger, and my timing for war is off.
I play AdvancedCiv mod exlusively, because the computer opponents in that mod are incredible. It is basically vanilla (with few changes to leader OP traits) but with much better computer opponents.
This game was on this mod, on Prince (feel free to disparage). Setting is custom continents, with 2 continents, 7 random opponents. I always play this, which I think makes it harder because you the player are not affecting the civs on the second continent.
I got super lucky, because the landmasses allowed me to expand a lot without war, fueling my inner peacemonger. I finally got 16 cities, which included razing 2 barbarian cities and placing a much better city 1 tile over.
Opponents were Isabella, Victoria, Ashoka, Pacal, Peter, Gilgamesh and Washington. And then Cyrus (surprise!).
The story of the game was my rapid expansion (well, rapid for me) to all the empty land near me, and Izzy being a total beast. Isabella became supreme warmonger, and she was at war with everybody and hated by everybody but Ashoka. She stomped Gilgamesh, Peter, made Victoria her vassal, made Washington into a rump nothing civ. At the end, when I was building last parts of my spaceship, and despite having all modern war techs and units to boot, including ICBMs, she invaded me thru England.
Stealth bomber spam is a thing.
I placed 4, later more Mobile SAMs on the Uranium and Oil tiles I had. Did not matter. The well and the mine were immediately destroyed by a massive fleet of Stealth bombers (see the picture), which prevented me from building modern tanks, modern warships, nuclear weapons - I could basically make mechanized infantry. Thank goodness I build a crapload of modern tanks.
I finally learned this game that for a fighter plane to work, I need to press the "intercept" option in its menu.... I thought it was automatic. Ooooops. Did not matter, my cities defenses were reduced close to zero despite Mobile SAMs and fighters (some modern, some not, because I could not upgrade them due to Stealth bombers doing their thing).
The thing which ticked me off was that I got a HUGE penalty for being at war with "brothers and sisters of faith", and my cities tanked... I did not see this affecting Izzy at all (or she did not care, which is possible). I nuked her cities, terminator Izzy shrugged and kept going. She released her city on another continent and made a 9th player, Cyrus, who of course was at war with me. I did not care too much, because by that time I had few turns to win spaceship victory (which me, being the peacemonger, is my go to winning condition).
The first picture shows Stealth Bomber spam, holy moly.
The next two show the globe, first with all my cities, then at end game where Izzy was kicking me up and down and all over (hello Cyrus, who are you again? where did you come from?) while I waited for spaceship to be launched....
This is the best 4X game, perhaps the best game, I have ever played on a computer. Nothing beats Civ4, especially with this advanced civ mod.
