GOTM for SMAC?

I doubt it as there are a few important basics to establish eg ground rules (which I feel should be similar to those in Civ2 ie no reloading and bans on obvious cheats like the perpetual parachute drop in SMAC), So a concensus on this would be needed and discussion canvassed here.

So far even the version to use would need to be agreed on and the response to date seems split 4:4.

What do people think? I'd think that one needs at least 6 or so to make sure there are enough takers for each gotm.

Well, if things remain as they are, its probably wiser to go w/ SMAC. We'd miss out on some really cool stuff, but SMAC is still a cool game itself. We need to find thses SMAC guys some copies of SMACX. ;)

Exactly; everyone can play a SMAC gotm, and for a small group like this, you need to go lowest common denominator.

I've tried twice to start SMAC gotms here and neither time did anyone turn in a game -- despite several people expressing interest!

So I'll sign up for this one, and wish it luck.

Ok, since Taé asked me for a little advice as ex GOTM admin...

My biggest suggestion is to be initiative. Someone here needs to say "I'll start a game and post it here." Give a deadline and let people post their results in a new thread. That's all there is to it. :)

But you might want to start a poll to ask who'd like to play with what version. I have no experience with SMAC and don't know what's compatible, but start a game in the version that will have the most participants.

Now, stop saying "Let's do it", but just do it. :p

So far it seems SMAC has the majority preference (which suits me fine).

While it is agreed that an initiative should be taken soon, I'd still like some consensus on the gournd rules first.

1. No reloading
2. No cheats - we need to decide what are allowed and what are banned.

Banned:
(i) Paradrop bug

please add others.

What is the paradrop bug. Must make sure so I don't use it:D I know no bugs.

We might have to think about a scoring system and victory conditions. I think a diplomatic victory would come a lot faster than the ascent to transcendence, so this might affect the score a lot if we account for speed. But on the other hand one might have to concider speed also since, I doubt many have time for so called "high score"-games.

I'll post a list of bugs/cheats shortly (I have to refer to SMAC info from my archived CDs!).

On scoring: I think we can use the Civ2 GOTM system with its weighting for minimum turns with additional awards for the shortest game, the highest SMAC-game score (for those with the time to try) and even OCC.

OK, the paradrop bug:

"Normally, a unit with drop pods can only make one air drop per turn and must start the turn in a base or airbase without having moved to perform the air drop. Activating a unit with drop pods, right-clicking on another square, and selecting the air drop command from the menu will always allow the unit to make the air drop as long as the square is within air drop range; this allows the unit to make an infinite number of air drops in a turn that don't have to start in a base or airbase and that don't depend on whether or not the unit has any movement points remaining. Using this procedure, drop infantry can perform an air drop, attack an enemy unit, and perform another air drop back to safety."

This was originally taken from an exhaustive list still available at:

http://www.civgaming.net/smac/acad_buglist.shtml

If people think it helpful, the list can be reproduced here as a basis for discussion for the gotm rules.

I don't know of any cheats or bugs. If no-one else knows any, perhaps we should just get on with the game. Whoever sets up the game could always state if anything is to be allowed or disallowed. I think we should try to get going before interest disappears.
