GOTM VIII results

I made top 20 in GOTM 8! I'm starting to get the hang of it.

Now if I could only keep from getting killed half the time...

Congratulations to all 66 GOTM 8 players! Wow, 66... Awesome! And especially Markone, Chofritz, and Alain for their awards. :goodjob:

Alain's accomplishment of defeating the world in 68 turns is of special note. Personally, one of the very first .SAVs I always look for is Cactus Pete's... the early-conquerors are fun to see. And BTW, in the next GOTM, the relative reward for early conquest will increase with the change to the FOTM formula .

Thanks for all the work, too, Matrix. Ans I look forward to seeing your new features in the spreadsheet each month. :)

TO EVERYONE: Don't forget to look through the GOTM .SAVs and make a few "Special Awards" nominations... with 66 entrants, we need all the creative minds looking for fun things of note, too! Don't forget that you know your own game the best, so feel free to self-nominate if you had a Kodak-moment!

TheViking, LeBigMec and Jonathan,
I got caught with the early finish bonus score in my first game (GOTM5).
I posted a thread: Before you submit GOTM8 ...
so that people would know. It explains why the early finish bonus score should not be counted.

BTW, congratulations to everyone who feels they deserve some.
8th was a little higher than I thought I would get after that game.
It's also good to see all the new players (66 in total).

I get the impression that it's possible to download other people's saved games, but I've looked around the site and haven't found a place that lets me do it. Can anyone help?

Um, I did look at the archive, and I saw a list of files for download, but as there was only one file per month I assumed that these were the start-of-game files.

It didn't occur to me that you'd pack everyone's saved games into one large zip file. However, now I understand. Thanks!

It might be worth adding a few words of explanation to the archive page, for the newcomers who will find this site after Civ 3 is released.

Noted.

At last I got around to looking at Starlifter's saved games -- and found that I couldn't!

I have Civ 2 Fantastic Worlds, and it complains that the version number of the file is greater than the version number of the game, so it won't load the file.

Shame...

Thanks, Chofritz. The downloads page describes this as suitable for converting scenarios; I wasn't aware that it could be used for converting saved games as well.

The first few times I tried to download it, I got an incomplete file, but I've now managed to get the whole thing, so I'll try it when I have time.

I've now tried MGEConverter on Starlifter's saved games, with the result that Civ 2 crashes when it tries to load them, and I have to hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and close the program from the Task Manager to recover.

Oh well. Civ 3 will be along soon, and I'll have Windows XP to install even sooner. Maybe it's time to stop playing Civ 2...

Jonathan,

There has been a little missunderstanding. I was talking about the patch that converts civ classic to civ 2 MGE, :) I was not talking about a savegame converter, ;)
