A phrase I've read here on occasion is that some locations are 'perfect for generating great people" . Maybe I just don't yet understand what all contributes to the generating process ??

I know that building wonders helps generate gp points, but that usually means having good hammer production with enough population to work the squares.... but the references I've seen seem to be refering to city locations with lots of food, so I thought I'd ask and see if anyone can illuminate me on the mysteries..

Thanks..

You generate the GP points with specialists. The GP farm works best with the national epic and caste system, so you can assign as many scientists/merchants/artists as you want.

to produce GP points 'en masse' you need to assigne pop to specialists slots : +3gpp per specialist instead of +2 per world wonder or +1 per national wonder...
ie: 4 specialists equals the gpp produced by 8 WONDERS !!! (even more if you count national wonders (1gpp) in the wonder thing)

To have 4 specialists you need only : pop 12; or smaller if you have food reesources or floodplains or if mercantilism or Statue of Liberty (repsectivelly +1 and +1 free specialist)

it is far easier to have a 12 pop city with +8 (or more) excess food (to divert 4 specialists) than to build more than 6 wonders in the same city. Some wonders are interesting in your GP farm: national epic : +100% (50%?) gpp, and eventually the Great Library : +2gpp wonder + 2*3gpp (2 free scientists)
other wonders are not interesting in a GP farm (they are waste of hammers)

furthermore, with specialists you can adjust/target the next GP you will have instead of being dependant on the randomness due to the wonder you produced..

EDIT : I forgot the Glob theatre that may help if you have the hammers : no unhappy is not unusefull in a city you hope to have more than 24+ pop (even 30+ pop if you can)
30 pop= depending on terrain : without food ressources, with only plain grasslands : at least 10 specialists (12 if mercantilisme and SoL): 30gpp +1 Globe T + 1Nat Epic (+ 2 Great Library) = 32 min or 40 (30+1+1+2+2*3)
32 * free religion(100%) * philosophical(100%) * national epic(100%) * parthenon (50% in other city) = at least 64 (NE), up to more than 180gpp !! (with 40 base *350%)

you will love your 30pop city as a gp farm !! :D

I don't build the globe theater in my GP farm when I'm not going for a cultural victory. The "risk" of getting a great artist is too high...

6 World Wonders, actually. Or 5 World and 2 National.

oups, my mistake...
thank you

Wow... thank you for the very clear explaination.. like many things, so simple once explained.. I plan on trying that next game...

thanks..

they are my favorites! culture bombs are great.

anyway to never get Prophets ? those are the worst

also I wanted to say I read a post once saying it was better having one city to produce GP than 3-4 cities...is this better ?

It is almost always better to concentrate GP points than to spread them among cities. It won't increase* the number of GP you will eventually produce, but you will produce them much sooner, when their value is higher.

The exception to this is when you are playing a strategy that requires specific GP types in a specific order at specific times. In this case, you want to spread out the type and amount of GP points you generate.

*When any game ends, there will be some waste of GP points. It's quite possible that the wasted points from several cities combined could have added up to produce another GP if they were all generated in a single city.

I do not understand why players seem to bash the great artist on the forums? I think they are almost a nessecary for cultural victory. I also use them in war to drop culture bombs after I take a city that I don't raze.

I love the great artists! I go for cultural victory alot and there is nothing like those to help balance out the culture between the 3 cities.

I can't see why you wouldn't. The sheer number of people you have in your GP farm will mean they go angry quite easily when you're at war, or when their numbers get insanely high. I don't mind the great artist chance, as great artists are almost always useful in some function, even if they may not be the most useful at the moment, unlike great prophets who are extremely hit-or-miss.
