On many of the conquests the AI will build cities on the very edge of the map (I guess this was a problem in the original as well but I never really played maps without ice caps and x wrapping). You can't see the names or population of the cities which is kindof annoying, you can however right click to see the top unit of the stack though. Ideally it would be nice it they made the map able to scroll a little further and just make the empty square black like they are in the editor.

I hate that. I had three towns a received in a peace treaty negotiation, and I couldn't see any of them on the map.

I had to go into the city screen and flip through the cities to find them and even then it only showed a portion of the city.

Trying to locate them using the locate a city function did show that two of the cities were at the edge of the map with a hint of my border colour indicating the the city was down there somewhere.

The third city could not be found with the loacte a city function, not even a hint.

There used to be a way to hide the side stuff, but I can't remember what that hotkey was (although by now, I'm certain that it probably has changed. Possibly x? It's been a long time since I've used it.). If it was removed, it should be put back in the next patch. Even having an option button for it would be nice. If someone finds out what it was, I'd be much obliged if they could say what the shortcut is, if it's still there.

hotkey to hide the unit command icons is [delete]. I don't know why it isn't listed in game help, I guess that is another bug that can easily be fixed with a text editor.

Yeah, it's kind of annoying. I think good solution would be to make at least two rows/columns of tiles at the edge of the map inhabitable (no founding cities allowed just like in the mountains/swamp). If a map needed to be stretch a bit for some scenarios - so be it.
