Hello everyone.
I have spent (wasted??) far too much time now trying to find a solution for this, and so it comes time for a post! I sure hope someone can help here!
The problem: game starts up fine. whether i start a game or stay on the menu the same happens after a short time (<30 seconds), small glitches start appearing that look remarkably like old film, crackles and black dots. Then after more time I get these biiiig straight diagonal lines, often trumpetting (is that a verb??) out from a point. This all happens and gradually worsens just on the menu screen. In a game the same happens, all gradually worsening with time, then much more of these glitch-lines, usually eminating from an object and so will move around the screen if you move the screen, if you see what I mean. And then sometimes rivers go a bit weird, and if you zoom in you can see rather interesting white patterns swirling around the ground. And then the killer - sometimes the entire ground surface goes a kind of dynamic black/colour checkerboard, jiggling all over the place.
All of the above symptons will then come and go or combine as I play (if I can force myself to work through them, which can become almost impossible at times).
Here's an odd thing that differentiates my problem from most on this board: NO CRASHES... just these glitches
I'll attach my DxDiag file for my system specs. I'm running just Civ4 but with the latest patch (1.74?) downloaded today.
Things I've tried:
I've tried my GeForce FX 5200, and the glitches don't appear at all, just with my 6800.
I've tried running Civ4 at absolute minimum quality as regards ingame controls.
I've updated my BIOS and other drivers.
I tried using the NvHardPage utility to fiddle with shaders and stuff, and that may have helped, maybe, it may have delayed the onset of the problem just a little, but still not a success.
I've tried all the Civ4.ini fiddles.
I've tried allllll sorts of new Graphics Card drivers, but there's a weird thing about my card. It's an XFX, and on the label, physically on the card, it says "GeForce 6800GS 256mb DDR3 Dual DVI TV" But as you'll see in my DxDiag, my PC thinks it's a 6800GT! What?? Has anyone experienced anything like this? I've tried old and new drivers for both a GS and a GT, both from XFX and from Nvidia, and none fix the problem.
One thing regarding trying different drivers, I realised that I haven't been UNinstalling my old video drivers before installing new ones, this is the case for the last few months, including all my efforts today. I don't know if this affects anything, but if so how can I wipe all my video drivers from my system in order to start afresh with just one at a time?
OTHERWISE: Does anyone have any ideas or experience with this kind of issue? It's very odd and as you can imagine, very ffffffffflipping annoying, and I've spent so much time on it already, I don't know what to do next...
Thank you all and sorry for the big message
