I've been having troubles identifying the symbols in the novel Great Gatsby, if anyone could help me with the symbols and the meaning i'd appreciate it. The cliffnotes disagree with eachother sometimes so i am very confused.

I read that book last year, I'll try to think of some of the symbols.

Are not the eyes symbolizing the eyes of god?

the green light simalizes hope, and dreams.. it was on dasiys side of the dock, and gastby reached out for it, it was specal to him cus it seem like his dream was so close

The eyeglasses in the billboard are a harbinger of destruction. Gatsby himself is symbolic of virtue, but his love is fixed on a corrupted woman, in a corrupt world. Hence virtue cannot survive in the world, the world will hate and destroy it.

due to popular demand, the book has been retitled "The fair to average gatsby"

Hold on, let me get out the essay I wrote on it last year...

Ha, found it..

Well, the Valley of Ashes where Myrtle lives is supposed to represent fallen hopes and destroyed dreams.

yeah, the green light represents hope.

Daisy and Myrtle are actually types of flowers. A daisy it al tall, regal flower. It comes up before most and it white - purity. Myrtle, however, is a low, ground covering plant with these tiny flowers, either periwinkle or purple flowers. The idea is that myrtle tries to be flashy and beautiful, but it can never match the high-class daisy.

I wish I could help more - I aced this part of my American Literature class, but I just cant remember everything about the book. If there are certain items you need help with, I can help. I just need to refresh my memory of what's actually in the book.

told yea :)
