I dont quite understand the great leader..
What does it do and how do I use it..
Also ,the AI always seems to have the great leader going with troops I thought you had to keep a great elader out of sight where it couldnt be killed??

The great leaders can create an army. This page has good info on armies. They can rush buildings, units, and small wonders (in C3C) and in Vanilla Civ and PTW they can rush anything. The AI is probably protecting the leader so it doesn't get killed (they don't have any attack or defense).

In Vanilla/PTW, the leader can be used for 1 of 2 things: creating an army, or rushing an improvement. I suspect the leader you see is actually an army. You get what looks like a leader along with the army.

In general, what people use leaders for are:

Rushing the Forbidden palace.
Creating an army.
Rushing a wonder (in Vanilla/PTW - in conquests, you can't use military great leaders to rush Great Wonders)

You only can use the leader once.

One MGL can build one army. If you build the military academy, though, you can build armies in the same city with the MA.

... and you need 4 cities for every army.
