I just built the Great Library and I am not receiving technologies that two other civs know. Is this a bug or is the information in the in game documentation wrong? Btw, there are just three civs left (me and two others).

Thanks in advance for and information.

You will not recieve technologies that the other both had prior to the completion (sp?) of the GL. Which sucks, but is probably for balance.

You dont get things automatically. It waits for the next time someone else discovers (or receives from huts, stealing or trades) a tech you do not have that at least one other player has. Then you get it. If several other players have something you do not, you wont get it until another player gets it somehow.

It's not all its cracked up to be...

BTW, welcome to CFC! All those "grey area" questions you have that the Civ manual and Civopedia don't completely answer: ask 'em here! We all learn from each other.

Another way to learn fast is to join the group games with a lot of discussion: the Democracy game and the Game Of The Month. Read the logs and discussion forums. Don't be afraid to ask what may seem to be "dumb" questions. There is incredible depth to CIV2, and few of us have heard it all. I just learned something about Capitalization I did not know. There are lots of great old threads that explain and discuss things like trade, diplomacy, combat and strategies.

Enjoy!

With the great libary thing i normally go for it every time. I t depends how well you are doing to, if you are number one and learn everything before anyone else does then there really is no point for it
The best way is to lean technologies that you think the ais wont learn first

Welcome to CFC, Sims. The Great Library's hindrance is in giving you techs you dont need at times you dont want them. Every time you get a tech, the number of beakers you need to have for the next one goes up (unless you know the trick of gifting your KeyCiv, if you've made contact with them and are not at war, but even so that cannot bring you down below the increasing base level). If you have a specific tech plan for your start (I usually start with Monarchy/Trade/Philosophy) each extra tech makes the next one take longer. True, working on techs the AI neglect will make the GL pay off better, but if you are not choosing your opponents wisely it is hard to guess what they are shooting for. Marco Polo helps in this area immensely, such that I prioritize it early and leave GL for the AI to waste their time building (I like to get Lit early and hand it off to everyone else; it often causes them to switch from a Wonder I want like Colossus or Copernicus). After it is obsolete (Electricity, which I make a priority getting in mid-game) I'll capture it for the score bonus.

Haha. I just learned yesterday that caravans increase knowledge as well as coinage. DOH!

The way I see it is that it lets you decrease your science significantly so you can build-up coinage to use to rush units, bribe cities, etc. etc. One of my other favorite things to do if I'm behind on tech is go to war with a high-tech civ and load-up boats full of diplomats and spies to steal techs ad infinitum. :D
