I was playing as the greeks on a huge archipelago map the other day, and their true advantages revealed themselves to me. When you are isolated on an archipelago map from other civs until the middle ages, science is very, very important. The Greeks certainly have an advantage.

1. They are scientific, obviously this means more science.
2. They are commercial, which leads to more science.
3. The start off with alphabet, which is a precurser to the Great Library (its not a necessary wonder for an archipelago map, but it prevents one of the comps from getting it).
4. They start off with bronze working, or whatever it is that gives you access to build the Colossus. This leads to more commerce.
5. Once the Greeks have completed the Colossus, and the Great Library, they will always enter a golden age, which gives them a HUGE bonus especially when isolated.

What do you all think?

yep, they have a good chance to get a boost just when it matters (when trying to spread to new islands), but this means war or getting the wonders - hard to do on Emperor and deity :(

I like to play as a harder civ on archipelago, such as the americans. It seems to give a greater challenge that way :)

Also, remember that Alphabet is a huge step on the way to map making and the Great Lighthouse to help you get off the island.

yes but dont persia start off with exactely the same things and frankley i like the immortal more than the hoplite

No Persia are industrial which means masonry as opposed to alphabet.

Although Persia are one of my prefered civs (and the one I'm going through a phase of). All you need is iron and 3 or 4 cities with half decent production to put a dent in the AI starting on YOUR land.

A course of cultural re-alignment is always the best policy. :D
