Hi all... long time Civ player. Put the game down a while back but recently saw Civ IV was out so thinking of buying. In the meantime, going to mess around with my Civ II. I don't have any additions/expansions but was looking for a different experience. Can anyone recommend a mod for Civ II vanilla? How about the Tolkien mod? Any good?

Well, welcome back, Sean. I hope some modpack/scenario expert like Catfish will answer you. As far as I can recall, Civ 2 vanilla can handle simple mods, but not full scenarios, which are generally more fun. There may be patches that allow vanilla to run scenarios - dunno.

There are quite a few good Tolkien scenarios out there [do you have the author's name ?]; my favorite is an oldie by Harlan. I just happened to stumble onto a link to it in the scenario forum

If you don't get a better answer soon in this thread, your question might get more attention in that forum.

I know very little about vanilla Civ2 mods; I rapidly switched from vanilla to FW, and then to ToT. He's already found the MGE 'upgrade' patch.

Harlan's LotR is best played with FW. With MGE you're probably going to have trouble maintaining your Elven and Rohirric allies, and the scoring will be off because MGE doesn't read major city objectives. You can find more Tolkien scenarios in the Fantasy scenario download section: http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=cat&id=86.

The first file on the upgrade page, Civ278.zip, is FW. Extract that into your vanilla Civ2 directory and you'll have FW. BTW, you could have all three installed simultaneously. Install vanilla Civ2, then make two copies of the Civ2 directory. Extract the FW files into one and the 5 MGE archives into the other. Run civ2.exe from the appropriate folder to play the desired version. There's no upgrade patch for ToT.
